Residents' complaints result in drug seizures, five arrests By Stephanie Hounsell CANADIAN CHAMPION STAFF Police have arrested and charged five Milton residents in connection with two recent drug investigations that came about as a result of residents' complaints. On Tuesday evening, police observed what they believed was a drug transaction between a suspect and several other people who pulled up in a vehicle in the area of Laurier Avenue. After the suspected incident, the car was stopped and its occupants arrested. A search warrant was conducted at a Laurier Avenue house and another man was arrested, said Det. Sgt. AI Albano of Halton police's Drug and Morality Bureau. Seized was a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, a cell phone and $400, police said. A 20-year-old Laurier Avenue man has been charged with trafficking and possession for the purpose of trafficking. He'l appear in Milton court July 28. A 21-year-old male of Dixon Drive has been charged with possession of a controlled substance. The others who were arrested were released without charges. The investigation into this matter started in 2006 when police received information from several residents regarding activity they thought was suspicious. Police observed another suspicious inci- dent the evening of Thursday, July 2 at a Commercial Street house after receiving calls from concerned residents. "(Officers) saw activity they thought was consistent with drug trafficking," Albano said. Three Milton residents were arrested and the home was searched. Seized was a small amount of crack cocaine and a pellet rifle. Charged with possession of a controlled substance were a 35-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man of Commercial Street and a 51-year-old man of Bell Street. They were released and are scheduled to appear at court August 4. Albano said additional charges could be laid depending on an analysis of the pellet rifle. Police are hoping other residents will fol- low the example set by the people who reported their suspicions to police in both these incidents. "Most of our files (investigations) are gen- erated hv citizens." Albano said. its neighbours noticing irregularities in their neighbourhoods or suspicious activity." Sgt. Brian Carr said it's important for resi- dents to know their calls and concerns are taken very seriously. "The message we're trying to get out there is when people phone in Milton, we will get your complaint," he said. Stephanie Hounsell can be reached ai sthiessen@miltoncanadianchampion.com.
