Working Together to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle by Regional Chair Gary Carr It has been over one year since Halton Region implemented new waste collection programs, including weekly collection of Blue Box and GreenCart materials and every other week collection of garbage. As a result of the new programs, residents are now diverting just over 60 per cent of waste or 27,448 tonnes of garbage away from the landfill. I thank Halton residents for their commitment to the environment and for making the new waste collection programs such a success! Your ongoing participation plays an important role in protecting and preserving the environment for generations to come. I encourage every resident to continue to take actions to reduce, reuse and recycle in order to divert more than 60 percent of waste away from Halton's landfill site. What Do 1 Do With? Many residents often ask how to dispose of specific items, instead of sending them to the landfill. I am encouraged by this trend because it demonstrates we are changing how we look at our waste. Below you will find some household items with options for reusing or recycling. Metal and Appliances Metal and appliances are collected by Halton Region on a call-in basis only. You must schedule a metal and appliance pick up date before placing material out for collection. Contact Halton Region by dialing 31lor 905-825-6000 or 1-866-4HALTON (1-866-442-5866). This service is not offered in Halton Hills collection areas 1 and 2. Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Materials such as batteries, compact fluorescent light bulbs, paint, chlorine, pesticides and motor oil can harm the environment if disposed of incorrectly. Bring these materials to the Household Hazardous Waste Depot located at the Halton Waste Management Site at 5400 Regional Road 25, Milton. Household hazardous waste will be recycled, refined or disposed of safely, free of charge (20 L limit). Unwanted electronics should not go in the landfill. Most parts of electronics - steel, glass, copper, aluminum, plastics and precious metals - can be recycled to make new products. Electronics such as TVs, computer monitors, computers and printers are accepted at the Halton Waste Management Site for a small fee. Halton Region is now holding several Special Waste Drop-off Days to make the recycling of household hazardous waste and electronic waste more convenient. Visit www.halton.ca/waste for specific dates and locations in your communty. TAKEBACK! HALTON www.halton.ca/takeitback Take It Back! If you choose to line your GreenCart, please ensure you are purchasing and using acceptable liners. Not all liners sold in local stores are accepted for use in Halton's GreenCart program; some packaging looks similar to compostable liners but they are in fact plastic liners.
