Things looking up for Sr. Sox Earn split with league leaders The Senior Red Sox continued to salvage a largely forgettable June run at Brian Best Park Saturday afternoon - earning a hard-fought doubleheader split with the COBA-leading Erindale Cardinals. Both games were won by the nar- rowest of margins, with Milton tak- ing the first contest 3-2. That was thanks largely to strong defence and credible pitch- ing by Brian Stewart, who gave up just six hits - including a two- run blast that wound up on the other side of Commercial Street. Besides that, he held the Cardinals in check. Mike Grabauskas worked the final one- and-a-half third innings to record the win, getting bailed out by catcher Nick Mazzorato, who cut down a steal attempt in the seventh to thwart an Erindale rally. Kurt Mitchell shared the spotlight by driv- ing in Kevin Greer from third in the bottom of the seventh. Greer accounted for two of the five Red Sox bits with a pair of doubles, while Jay Egbuna drove in a run on a double of his own. Called up from the juniors, Scott McTrach gave an impressive six-inning performance in the latter game, surrendering just two earned runs on seven hits through six frames. Unfortunately that wasn't enough for the hosts to pull out the sweep, as they were held to a mere three bits and edged 4-3. Mazzorato drove in a run on a sin- gle, while reliever Jcff Felker gave Milton one last shot at a comeback by fanning two batters in a score- less seventh. Saturday's split followed a 9-7 slugfest triumph over the Glanbrook Grizzles last Wednesday. Adam Scheerer picked up the win with a seven-inning effort and Steve Lauzon drove in three runs with a 3-for-5 night. Mazzorato and Carlos D'Costa each had three hits and two RBI. The Red Sox sat at 6-8 heading into last night's trip to Ninth Line Park to take on the St. Catharines Metros. Tonight they're back at the nearby diamond for another make-up game, against the Brampton 3attlecats.
