I 'm uisually impressed with teens V ve been reading witb interest the ongoing discus- sion in tbe letters section between aduits and teens regarding tbe work etbic of teens. I've been critical in some columns over tbe years about the service provided by teens at fast food places and coffee sbops. In some cases ifs abysmal; in other cases ifs not. For example, last weekend I wenr to two different coffee sbops in Milton. Teens are most likely to work in the evenings or on weekends. At one, the guy didn't look at me once. He didn't say a word; be just took the money, gave tbe change and handed me the coffee. At the otber, a girl welcomed me with a pleasant hello, smiled and was very polite. So, let me ask tbe teens. \Vbicb one nsul 00(1ou preler if you were a customer? I like wben teens stick up for tbemselves, tbough, because it sbows tbey care. But 1 can still take issue witb some of the comments. For example, I don't tbink it matters if you're making minimum wage or not. If you agree to, do a job, tben do it nigbt. If you don't tbink you can do tbe job as if's meant to be donc. then do sometbing else. Maybe use it as training for your people skills. No matter wbat you do for the rest of your life, you're always going to bave to please or answer to some- one, wbether its fair or not, Get used to it. As a teen, I worked for several years at a gas bar. Thms was before the (lays of ýcfscrvc. 1 btd su runm around, sometimes tn the cold or rain and pump gas for several bours a day I was- n't very pleasant about t, but I wasn't rude. I tbink some of the frus- tration from customers nowadays is that so often the order is wrong. 1 keep extra sweetenier iii mny car when someone can't add up to two, and 1 use it ail the time. Not just in Milton, of course. Take somc pride in your work. Its likely only tempo- rary anyway, and its a good idea to get used to doing your best. Besides, tbis is probably tbe easiest job you're ever going to have. l'Il tell you what I think, tbough. When I leave a place where the teen bas no social graces or makes no effort to, be pleasant, it gives me a bad feeling. 1 leave a place wbere tbe teen is polite and pleas- ant, tt gives me a good feel- ing. Maybe armed witb tbis knowledge today, I would bave made more of an effort myseif to be tbat way wbien I was a teen. For tbe most part, I'ni itnpressed witb teens. Back nsbcoI ns a n iig lu1w r at the ( ltamprort andi bad to talk to teens on a regular basin, I was always impressed witb tbeir poise, tbougbtful- ness, confidence, oratory skills and social graces. Tbe key to it aIl is one tbing. Do a good job and nobody wtll complain.
