Adjacent to the recycling centre, hundreds of styrofoam camnshaft carriers from the engine shop are stacked, ready to, be shipped. These have been used in the engine sbop, where an innovative reusable pack- aging program has been in place since 2006. This program has already achieved $1.3 million in savings for 2007, taking into account the ini- tial investment of labour and cquipment. Very simply, the program sends packaging back to the manufactur- er, ratber than recycling it or send- ing it to landfill. Denise Coogan, manager for safety and environmental compli- ance, referred to tbe styrofoam car- riers when pointing out that cost savings are based on using the packaging five times. "But SIA is actually getting six or seven, so that figure sbould grow.
