A6 -The Canadian Champion, Wednesday, October 8, 2008 Hereswho we think wiII best represent Halton For almost as long as elections and the printcd word have co-existed, newspapers have offered their choice of leaders in local, provincial and federal offices. The purpose of such an exercise isn't necessariiy to sway your vote, but to hopefully make people thînk about the importance of casting a ballot and te, encourage everyone to get out and exercise the right our forefathers fougbt - and died - to preserve for aIl Canadians. ln reaching our decision we looked not only at the local candidates, but also at their respective party leaders and at the reality of the world in wbich we are living. lu the Halton Riding, voters have the choice between Liberal incumbent Gartb Turner, Conservative Lisa Raitt, the NDP's Robert Wagner, Green candidate Amy Collard and Tony Rodrigues of the Christian Heritage Party Here at the Canadian Champion, we havc decided to back a newcomer to the local political scene. She represents the Conservative Party of Canada. At the local level, we feel Raitt brings invaluable experience as CEO and president of the Toronto Port Authority to, a job that will see her focusing on Halton's woefully underfunded infrastructure neecis. We also support Raitt because sbe represents the party that seems best equipped to, lead Canada through the uncertainty of the current economic cri- sis south of the border, through the conclusion of Canadas military involvement in Afghanistan and on tc, wbat we hope will be more prosperous days ahead. Wbile Turner is the riding's most politically-expe- rienced candidate, we believe the outspoken, rebel- lious, party-be-damned approach be bas taken ln the last two-and-a-balf years will be counter-productive to the team-building enviroriment we tbink Canadians want froru their next goverument. Turner, to, bis credit, bas kept in close touch with his constituents tbrougb numerous public forums. He basn't been afraid [o, meet bis detractors in per- rson. However, wbile Turner promises to stand up for bis constituents, we're just not sure where he stands politically. lu the 2006 federal election, he ran successfully for tbe Conservative Party' by basbing the Liberai party Two years later, be now speaks glowingly of the Liberal party and reserves bis venomous attacks for bis Conservative opponent and ber partys leader. Frankly, it sounds like Turner wiil say anytbing to get himself elected. Wbile Collard, Wagner and Rodrigues seem to ah be wel-intentioned candidates witb some înteresting ideas, none bave demonstrated the sort of leadership experience Halton Riding residents need iu order to be beard in Ottawa.
