Widespread reaction to outbreak Several food industry giants have also reacted quickly to thie listeria outhreak. Tim Hortons has posted a sign saying its meats are not part of the recall. The franchises corporate website posted the following statement: "We have been advised liy Maple Leaf Foods they expand- ed their recall to include ail meats produced at the Bartor road facility in the past year. The list of items includes Tins Hortons slow rost beef. "Tins Hortons is not serving rost beef to customers as the sale of this product ended in early July Please lie advised that this Ils not a ready-to-eat product. Slow roast beef is suliject- ed tor a high cooking temperature of above 165'F which destroys any liacteria of concemt. No other Tim Hortons products are affectedi ly the recal." Boston Pizza issued a news release Monday stating it had stopped serving roast beef supplied by Maple Leaf Foods' Toronto plant as a precautionary measure - even tliough the product has showed nu evidence of contamination. A Maple Leaf turkey prodtîct supplied to McDonalds is also on the lengthy list of recalled meats. Meanwhile, Haltons liealth department hs confîrmed it is working with its provincial counterparts tu help investi- gate and control the outbreak. "Health departmnent staff has heen keeping Halton health- care facilities up to date with information related to this out- break, and lias been providing local surveillance infurmation tu the provincial authorities," said Dr. Monir Taha, Haltons associate medical officer of health. "We are incresing com- munication witli food vendors, and adding extra inspections to assist with the CFIA recal." Ruf said two-dozen inspectors are attempting to visit independent, non-chain businesses across Halton to ensure they are aware of the recaîl and have removed any potential- ly-contaminated meat products. So far, inspecturs have not found any recalled products still on the shelf during their visits, wich is good news, Ruf said. H-e added that the inspections would carry on at least fur the rest of tbis week. "(The inspections) are very intensive," lie said. The food safety manager stressed to residenis that if they have meat in their fridge or freezer and aren't sure wliere it corne from, they should get rid of it.
