Two seniors oenong victims By Jason Misner SPECIAL TO THE CHAMPION Two Haltan residents - bath from Burlington - have heen stricken with the samne sixain of listeria linked ta a deadiy outhreak of the hacteria that originated at a Toronto meat plant. Halton Regian health inspectors have heen asked by the Ontario Ministry of Health to visit area hospi- tais, long-termn care homes, day-care centres and independent stores ta ensure that meat products at the source of the outbreak have heen pulled fram sheives and are not heing used by the service industry The affected residents include a waman in hier 80s and a man in his 60s, said Matt Ruf, Halton Regions manager of food safety The department would not identify the patients, wha are cur- rently under the care of their respective doctors. Ruf said hie didn't know the current condition of the man or woman. He said the patients' doctors ordered lah tests in July, which confirmed thse pres- ence of listeria, a potentially-fatal. bacte- ria that can lead ta, fever, muscle aches, inausea or diarrhea. It is a reportahie health disease in Ontario. Last weekend, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) received lab results tramt Health Canada that confirmed a link between meat products produced at Maple Leaf Foods' Bartor Road plant in Toronto and an outhreak of listeriosis mn four provinces. The plant remains closed and more than 220 ready-to-eat meat products recentiy shipped from it have been recalled. The products are pack- aged under varlous well-known naines such as Hickory Farms, Schneiders and Shopsys. The meat recail does not involve Maple Leafs Burlington park process- ing plant. To date, six Ontario deaths have heen directly linked ta the outbreak. Because the onset of symptoms of listeriosis can occur up ta, 70 days afier contammnated food is consumed, the CFIA expects the number of conhirmed and suspected cases ssii1 continue ta increase aver the next severai weeks Listenia can be found in a variety of dairy and meat products, vegetabies and fish, soil, water and manure-hased fertilizers, and is carried by farmn ani- mais.
