Brenda Pickering, 43, pleaded guilty to tbree counts of tbeft over $5,000 ear- lier tbis year. Pickering - wbo bas no previous criminal record - served as tbe volun- teer treasurer for tbe scbool councils at J.M. Denyes and Wl. Dick as well as at Georgetown's Stewarttown Public Scbool between 2002 and 2005. A police investigation was initiated after a complaint by the Halton District Scbool Board tbat irregularities bad been discovered in tbe scbool councils' accounting practices. Pickering was cbarged in February of 2006. Friday at Ontario Court of justice in Burlington, Justice Allan Cooper sent- tenced ber to an 18-montb conditional sentence, witb six montbs' bouse arrest. Pickering will be permitted ta, leave ber borne only for employment and for a few bours every Monday to sbop for necessities. After tbe 18 montbs, sbe'l be on probation for a year. For tbose two-and-a-balf years, Pickering won't be permitted to serve in a position of trust for any not-for- profit organization. At tbe time of the thefts, Pickering lived in Halton Hilîs. She now resides in Milton. The sentencing had been delayed numerous tîmes, witb Pickering wait- ing for a tax return that would allow her to pay the balance of her restitu- tion.
