Accardîng ta Det. Sgt. Murray Drînkwalter, there are several tlîings local res- idents can do ta help the service deal wîîh the graffiti issue, such as caîl police if they sec someone spray painting public or pnivate property "WVe need the help of the cammunity ta work on these incidents," saîd Dninkwalter. "The public is aur eyes and cars out there." He said citizens can alsa caîl Crime Stoppers if they believe they know someone responsible for graffiti. Although theres actually beets a decrease lately in the number of graffiti incidents reporîed ta police, Dninkwalter said he knows ihere are a lot of occurrences oui there thai go unreported - somethîng that makes dealing with the issue that mach more dîfficult for police. "bt (graffiti) is a grawing concemn of ours. Any lime people don't have respect for public or private property, it's always a concern," he said. "Its definitely a quality of life issue for everyane, s0 if you sec something, don't be afraîd ta cati it in." Dninkwalter saîd there bas been three graf- fiti occurrences reported so far thîs month and threc last month, whicb is down fram byve in june. Wiîhin the past year, the busîest month police had when at comes ta graffiti was October, which had 10 incidents. Whîle police don't have an explanation as ta why the numbers fluctuate, Dninkwalter said anc trend police have noticed is that Most occurrences happen in areas where youth cangregate, such as sehools. "Nat ail yautb are doing this though," he empbasized. "Ninety-bive per cent of youths are great kids. Its just fîve per cent who've lost ail respect (for property)." Sgt. Murray Dninkwalter of Halton Regional Police. Oficers were confronted by a mnan holding an axe in a threatenîng manner. He also had knîves taped to hîs wiists. The man was ordered to drap the weapons. He orîginally refused, but after further negotiations he complied. Police attempted to take the man into custody, but he lashed out, striking an offîcer wîîh bis hist, Drinkwalter said. Pepper spray was then deployed. After a short struggle, a suspect was subdued and arrested. The police officer wasn't injured. A 46-year-old Milton main lias been charged with mîschief, possession of dangerous weapons and assaulting a police offîcer. He was to be held for a bail hecaring Monday.
