DCs are levted hy munictpal- ies to recover growrh-related costs assocîated wtth things like roads, water and sewer infra- structure needed to service new developmnent. The new DCs are expected to cover 78 per cent of develop- tuent costs, or $56 mtllion per year, leaving 22 per cent to be paid hy the taxpayers, or $15 million. Currently the Region charges Halton-wide DCs for roads and general services and area-specif- tc DCs for water adwse water, wtth the latter fees being htgher in Halton Urban Structure Plan (HUSP) areas where rapid developmnent is tak ing place, like Milton, north Oakvtlle and the Milton/Halton Hilîs 401 cornidor. Now that the area-specific charges are conninuing, the cost to develop a home in a HUSP area wtll go front $22,752 to $28,864 and fronti $13,677 in a non-HUSP area lu $23,764. The price for a retail develup- ment tn a HUSP area wîII tise [romn $12.09 per square foot to $14.79, while non-HUSP retail will pay $1 1.23 per square foot, up [rom the current $10.36. Manufacturtng, office and warehousing businesses wilI have lu [ork over a dtsrounted rate of $10.74 per square foot in HUSP areas, up fron $9.59, and $7.18 per square foot in non- HUSP areas, which ts down sltghtly [rom the current $7.85. Once the discounts are phased out though, these fees wilI be the samne as those for retail developments. The new DC hylaw comes into effect on August 18.
