A6 - The Canadian Champion, Tuesday, April 29, 2008 PINION This spring countless Milton residents - armed mostly with garbage bags and gloves - have been working diligently across the town or will be in the coming weeks for some outdoor cleaning. Through their volunteer efforts, town parks, school * yards, creeks, forests and roadsides are being revital- ized temporarily for anoth- er year. * But then what? Are annual spring clean-ups enough? I t's definitely a good start, but there's so much more we should be doing 10 raise society's awareness * of how simple lifestyle choices can have a pro- found impact on our envi- rotiment. * While Halton residents have embraced thc reccntly DEAR EDITOR: Someone once observed, 'Those who can, do. Those who can do more, volunteer." Those may only be words, but they certainly express my sentiments. Every year, during National Volunteer Week, the Ontario Trillium Foutndation (OTF) makes a special point of cele- brating volunteers for the tremendous difference they make to the organization and the coninninties they serve. As chair of one of Canadas lcading grant-nmaking founda- tions, i feel strongly about the importance of v olunteers lise b F oard of direcrors and oui1 16 Grant Revicw i-canis mort, c han 300 p)coîic in total launchied (GreenCart pro- gram iii record numbers, are we giving eringh thoughit to wherc garbage goes after being picked up at the curb? Only by truly uandier- standing the volunme of household waste we pro- duce, where ail the garbage, recycling and GreenCart byproducts go and the impact landfills and varions wastelrecycla- lIe processing plants are having on our environ- ment, can we begin to appreciate the quagmire our over-packaged, over- fed, disposahie society finds itself in. We think you'll agree that we need far more than annual park clean-ups. Werve got to dlean up our act as well.
