By Steve LeBlanc CANADIAN CHAMPION STAFF Though hardly a stranger to guarding the field hockey net, Nicci Moses only made a fuli-time commitment to the role for the recent invitational national champi- onships at the University of British Columbia. Moments into the tournament opener, the i 5-year-old Miltonian was hikely questioning that* decision. "It was pretty nerve-wracking being out there for that first game and they scored two goals quite early, largely due to mistakes on my behaif," admits Moses, recalling a humbling start against Albertas Under- 16 squad. "One went through my legs and on the othcr 1 just misjudged my net." However, the local field hockey player - whose introduction to the sport came shortly before movng here from ber native England two years ago - would eventually show why she was picked as the Ontario Under-16 A team's starting goalie. Fortifying ber efforts Quickly gaining hoth confidence and composure once her teammates fortified their efforts for a 5-2 come- hack victory over Alberta, Moses would post three shutouts in an unheaten run to the finals. li thought 1 did pretty well (after that shaky start) and my teammates really did a lot to hclp me out." The biggest of her perfect perform- anccs was no doubt a 1-0 semnifinal squeaker against thc Under-14 contin- gcnt lrom B.C. - which thc local net- minder knows only too well is the perennial bot bcd for field hockey in Canada. -Wc biad a comnpetitive tr ip tbere with E.C. Drury last fal nd tbosc tcamns ouitberc absolutely annihilated us," shc cxplaincd. "B.C.'s a real power- bouse." But that didn't keep Moses and her provincial coborts from holding their own in a respectahle 4-0 championship loss to B.C.'s Under-16 team. Her team's 5-1 rom included a 10-0 dismantling of Ontarios Under-14 club and a 6-0 whitewash of the Under-14 team fromt Alberia. A laie addition to the provincial teamn after another goalie dropped out, Moses was in net for every game out west - something that didn't surprise ber two other coaches in the leasi. Plenty of talent: coaches "Niccis presence on the Ravens cer- iainly helped us get as far as we did in the season," remarked E.C. Drury grad- uate Lisa Brown, who's competed at the national level herself and coached Moses and company to the second round of the playoffs in this summer's Halton Rec Field Hockey league, fol- lowing a solid regular season. "When Nicci wasn't holding her own in the net making crucial saves, she was helping on defence with strong hits and a good sense of field play" Added Drury head coach Geoff Sheppard, It wasn't a surprise to see her as the (provincial team's) lead goalie. 1 knew there couldn't be a Grade 10 student in Ontario with her skills." With bigh-stakes goaltending expe- nience now under her proverbial beit, Moses feels fairly certain she's found a permanent home between the pipes. "Oh yeab, 1 don't think l'Il be play- ing out much anymore," said the national silver medalisi. Also part of the recent national showcase, whicb featured îeams from Ontario, Alberta and B.C. only, were fellow Miltonians Shaelyn Jobnston and Siephanie Takeuchi. Scbool-mates of Moses at Drury, the two servcd as forwards on Ontario's Under-16 B squad, which finished sev- enth. Takeuchi collected a handful of assists, whilejobnston scored once and added tbree belpers.
