Minor bants eke out tournieytitie Talk about coming through under pressure. Down by a couple of i-uns with two outs in their final at-bat ai the Mitchell Tournamrent championship, the minai- bantamn Red Sox pulled aff the ultimate clutch performance - scaring faur imes befare shutting down Listowel in the battomn of the seventh ta prevail 10-8. Playing huge dual raIes in Miltonîs dramatic title win were Alex Cunningham and Brady RimI, who pitched a big seventh inning ta earn the vic- toyjust moments after driving in the tying and go-a head i-un an a well-placed single. Equally instrumental in the narrow triumph, Cunningham ignited the late surge with a single - later scoring on a Hayden Mancini bit - and retired the last Listowel batter with a diving snag and throw-out irom second base. The Red Sox relied far more heavily on their defence and pitching prowess ta reach the cbam- pionship, dumpinîg Wyoming 12-2 in the quarter- finals befare a 3-0 semifinal shutout ai Thamesierd. The minai- bantams remain fi-st in league play with a 9-4 record. By Murray Townsend SPECIAL TO THE CHAMPION It was fitting that the Sun broke through late in the fourth quar- ter, just as it was assured the Marauders wauld enjay their bnightest moment of the season. In their final home game Saturday, Milton sloshed ils way ta a 29-8 deci- sion aver the Sarnia Imperials - earn- ing its fi-st win af the year. It dida't look as if either team was gaing ta score in the early going, as they traded field position for much af the first hall, bath sides having a diifi- cuit time holding on ta the football in the steady dawripour. With less than a minute remaining in the hall, a bad snap farced the Sarnia punter ta scramble, with Mark MacGillivary right an his heels. He managed ta get a line drive punt away that landed night inta the arms ai Craig Davoren, who brought it back 30 yards ta give Miltan their fi-st lead ai 2007. The Marauders picked up a single point on their first passession ai the second hall on a missed field gaal and then used some razzie dazzle ta set up their second touchdown. Running back Gearge Baiden came out ai the game with a minar injury and was replaced in the backfield by Craig Hawkins, a quarterback wha's seen limited play this seasan. Brandon Nikiforuk pitched the hall ta Hawkins, who fired it down the sidelines ta Damian Hannaford for a 45-yard gain. Then Baiden came back into the game and finished it off with a 21-yard touch- down run. Miltan scored again early in the fourth quarter after a swing pass ta Dave Van Aistyne gained 39 yards and put the Marauders on the four-yard line. A pass over the middle fram Nikiforuk ta Krishawn Thompsan accounted for the major. The Marauders' final score came late in the game when Sarnia tried an an- side kick, whicb unfortunately for them went night inta the arms of Baiden. He leit everybody in his dust as he sped 50 yards for the touchdawn. This happened right after Samiùa scored their anly points of the game. They kept getting the bail at the one- yard line with some very questianable pass interference calîs and the Marauders kept turning themn back. It taok fine plays before they were finally able ta punch it in. Baiden had his usual sensational game at running back - amassing 181 yards an 28 carnies - and Davaren was his usual autstanding self on defence, with 10 tackles, and was olten in the Imperials backfield about the same time as the baIl gat there. But other defensive players also stood aut. Sarnia came into the game wit.h a 3-2 record, and the tap teamn runming attack in the league, but were stapped in their tracks, or behind their tracks, much ai the rime. MacGillivary had another strang game, and big defensive plays came iram Ryan McGowan, Sergia Simas and Jahn Dixan. In the seconda-y Andre Clarke had twa interceptions. Coach Ken Lashley wasn't exactly papping the champagne cark over bis first victory as head caach. "lt'sjust one win,' he shrugged. "Theres still a long way ta ga.- Even sa, it's a majar step, not just because they played well, but because they also executed well, including the game plan, which mostly invalved handing the hall ta Baiden. "When you have the best back in the league, it makes it easy ta caîl the plays," said Lashley The Marauders head ta Sault Ste. Marie this coming weekend before lin- ishing the season at winless Quinte- Limestone. A victory in the final game will likely ensure a playoff spot for the Marauders. - '4Toth preserving dentistry with a caring touch.")j Fl ~~Clarkels Goli www.clarkesgolf.com New Patients Welcome!
