Some councillors opposed Prior to making any decisions though, a couple members of regional council made unsuccessful bids to con- vince their colleagues to oppose the GreenCart initiative. Milton Wards 1 and 3 Councîllor Banry Lee pointed tu a motion passed by town council Monday night asking the Region to defer the GreenCart issue until thse local municipalities have an opportunity to provide detailed input. He also spoke about the dissatisfac- nion in the rural area with the concept. "1 have not received one caîl in sup- port of il," he said. "Most people in my ward would not use it.- Meanwhile, Burlington Councîllor jack Dennison made anoîber push for garborators, or in-sink garbage dispos- ais, saying he thinks they're thse better way to go. Milton Mayor Gord Krantz ques- tioned what would happen if one of the local municipalîties rejects thse GreenCart idea. The concern was also raised lasi week at the committee level when it was explained that staff is looking aI whether thse Regions waste bylaw should bc altered so that service level decisions are made by regional council, not the individual mumcipalities. Director of Legal Services Mark Meneray told council if the one-tter approach is taken, there would contin- ue t0 he consultation with the local councils, but the uhtimate decisions would be made by regional council. Many of the councillors around the table went on to voice their strong sup- port for the GreenCart initiative, like Burlington Councillor Rick Goldring. "There's just a tremendous amnounit of advantages to doing this," he said. "This is the best thing we can do." Oakville Councillor Jeff Knoll and Burlington Councillor Rick Craven shared sîmilar stories of the success of the GreenCart pilot projeet in their wards, with both saying tbey received caîls from people outside thse pilot area asking when they'l1 get their GreenCarts. see PROGRAM on page A4 Today's Champion OPINION A6 BnmSS A7 CHAMPION couNTRYA16 DATELINE A17 CLASSIFIED A21 www.rrmltoncanadianchampion.coma www.miltontoyota.coml 00mRUD's AUTO www.gorrudisautogrOUP.COm Soîls, Mulch & Aggregates Flowers Shrubs & Trees Garden Decor -Design & Maintenance sý --àe Z a MI 1 VIILTON DENTURE CLINIC 905-876-2000
