iResidents send their healthcare jý funding concerns via postcards The Canadian Champion, Tueaday, May 22, 2007 -A3 More than 1,400 residents [rom across the GTA - includ- ing I lton - have delivered their healthcare concerns to iheir MPPs as part of an ongoing campaîgn that's pushing the Province to improve tiîmely access to local hospital care. They sent postcards to MPPs asking them t0 secure adequate and ongoing provincial growth funding to hospitais in their high-growth regions of the province and aliocate it on the hasis of population needs. The response came as part of the GTAI9O5 fleaithcare Alliance's Help Our Hospitals campaign in which posters and postcards were displayed in doc- tors' offices, hospitals and other locations across the regions. "Because the provincial gov- ernment does not allocatc hos- pital foîîding hased on popula- l ion needs and there is inade- quate growth lundîng 1<) meet the needs of the rapîdly increas- ing number of residents in our communities, our hospîtals are beîng shortchanged hy almost $900 million compared to hos- pitl' in other regions of Ontario," saîd Kirk Corkery, chair of the GTA/905 llealthcare Alliance. "People who live in these high-growth regions rec- ognize the impact ihis is having on themselves and their fami- lies." A recent poil conducted hy Leger Marketing and Redfern Research revealed that less than one third of people living in the GTA helieve their hospitals are treated fairly compared 10 other regions of the province. An overwhelming ma]orîty strongly believe their commumi- ty hospitals should receive a fair share of provincial funding and more than haîf hehieve the quai- iiy of hospital care in the GTA has deciined hecause of under- funding. "h is clear that people living in the GTA/905 understand that iheir hospitals are underfunded and thatibtis is affecting their tîmely access t0 health care close to home," coinmented Corkery.
