" -, ~ '" Of Lebanese origin, Dr. Aziz completed both her medical degree (1997) and surgical training (2002) at the American University of Beirut. She was the first female General Surgeon to graduate from her university and one of only two in Lebanon. "Residency was definitely a challenge. It's stili very much a man's world in my countr-y," explains Dr. Aziz. "Luckily, 1 had a very supportive family and the encouragement of my instructors - most of whom were trained in the United States." Dr. Aziz decided to pursue surgery thanks to the positive influence she received during ber surgical rutatiun as a medical student. "I had the mistaken impression that surgeons always have an answer and a clear treatment plan for the diseases they treat," she explains. "This was a little naïve - but still 1 love surgery. 1 find the immediacy of its success very gratifying. You can remove the source of pain and almost instantly improve the quality of your patient's life." In 2000, Dr. Aziz joined ber husband, Wadid, in Canada while she completed a research fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children (2002-2003) and a breast surgical oncology and a general surgical fellowship ait Sunnybrook and Women's College Hospital (2003-2005) through the University of Toronto. "We were looking for a nice family-oriented, healthy environment to raise our two children - Stephanie (4 years old) and Robert (1-1/2 year old)," notes Dr. Aziz. "1 was impressed by Milton's small hometown atmosphere and 1 had heard a lot of ver-y positive remarks about Milton District Hospital." Dr. Aziz joined Milton District Hospital in 2006. Her practice involves treating general abdominal and colorectal surgical conditions, and performi ng min imally- invasive breast surgical procedures including sentinel node biopsies. "1 am a strong proponent of comnprebiensive medical care,' continues Dr. Aziz. " My goal is not only to be a good surgeon but also a good, caring and compassionate doctor.
