AIS - The Canadian Champion, Tuesday, March 27, 2007 OPINI1ON FolIow the mies] îl~ Rules are rules. That's one of the first lessons children learu in life - at home and in the classroom. And we expect the Halton Catholic District School Board to follow the miles as well. That's why we're pleased to hear a legal challenge of the controversial school uniformi pilot project lis in the works. The trial would see students of Guardian Angels elementary school wear uniforms this fail. As reported elsewhere in this newspaper, news of the challenge came early Friday when the board issued a notice postponing parent information nights related to the pilot project. The bone of contention is whether or flot trustees followed proper procedure in voting for the uniforn pilot project Februarv 6. Board Chair AI Bailey argues the process trustees used in passing the project vîolated board policy But others, like Burlington Trustee Boh Van de Vrande, disagree. "The chairs interpreta- tion s that we're flot fol- lowing the rules," Van de Vrande said at the Fehruary 6 meeting. "It's the committees and the majority of the t.rustees' opinions that we are flot going outside of our policy whatsoever." So let's get to the bottom of it. As parent Howard Parker commented, the integrity of the school board is in question. "This goes way heyond a school uniform issue. It has become an issue of the functionality of the board," he said. Nothing wrong with help for HoIIy DEAR EDITOR: We aIl have it in us to belp others and organize support when we have a cause we believe in - and the baby Holly situation is just one of many exampies of the fine, car- ing, supportive nature of this commuity Going back 12 years to when 1 moved up here, over and over I have been moved by the caring side of the people, and even found myself actively involved in some of the events. Entertainers like Jason Blanchard, Alysha Brooke, Apollosdown, Steven Demetrious and many others give of their time and talent at fundraiser events from helping baby Holly to supporting Special Friends Day, MS Walkathon, breast cancer, Michael Papaioannou, etc. The HolIy event did flot take away from any other cause, did flot force anyone to contribute and support the cause and did flot cost the community or gov- ernment a penny It wasjust the bard, dedicated work of many ordinary people believing in helping one of our communi- ty's little people in need. Any one of the people writ- ing in with negative comments about baby Holly fundraising efforts have lit in them to take their cause to a new level, get people together, organize a fundraiser and raise the needed support they feel is due. That's what they should do, stop wasting time objecning tu a wondcrful event and take the bull by the horns and do some- thing for their cause. To letter writer G. Munnings, I wvill applaud and support you when you organize a group of people to host a fundraiser su start to raise money for the MRI machine. And to Maitlyn's mom, Karen Fyfle, I will applaud you also when you organize a fundraiser for EinOaks, a very fine estab- lishment that I also already per- sonally support. S. KOBOW MILTON More pressing issues than Town Hall expansion DEAR EDIOR: The Champion recently announced that the addition to Town Hall will soon begin. I wondered if such issues as dlean waser, sew- ers, encroachment on wildlife and the environ- ment including the air we breathe - to name just a few - would take precedent over a build- ing that bas no bearing whatsoever on the press- ing problems at hand, which multiply daily Much like Scarlett O'Hara, the attitude of the purse holders of our tax dollars seems to be "Fiddle-de-dee - we'll think about that tomor- row.' Weli, tomorrow is here. So far as the building addition is cortcemned, if they follow Forestry Management 101 and get nid of the dead wood, they might be surprised at how much space they already have. EUZABETH HARRISON MACARTHUR DRIVE Multi Menu not associated with pet food recali DEAR EDITOR: Quebec-based pet food dis- tribution franchisor Multi Menu would like the public to know its products aren't affect- ed by the recent Menu Foods recal and the company isn't associated in any way with Menu Foods.
