The Canadian Champion, Friday, March 9, 2007 - BI ARTS Choristers' upcoming show has amusing twist Silly Side of Singing slated for April i at Knox Church April Fool's Day is right around the corner, and the Milton Choristers are working hard to put together a suitably themed concert. On April 1, the Choristers will present The Silly Side of Singing from 3 to 5 p.m. at Knox Presbyterian Church, 170 Main St. E. This concert of humorous choral music is aimed at audi- ences of all ages and will include Stephen Lawerence's 'Concerto for Singing Chickens', Rossinis 'Cat Duet', Ernst Toch's 'Geographical Fugue' and Allan Robert Petker's 'The Feast'. Special guests will be members of the Bishop Reding Secondary School Choir under the direction of Karen Caruana. This is the second concert in the Choristers' 38th season, and will feature the talents of artistic director Sonja van de Hoef and accompanist Norman Reintamm. Tickets cost $20 for adults, $15 for students and seniors and $10 for kids aged 12 and younger. The Choristers is a community choir made up of men and women from Milton and the surrounding area. It presents a varied repertoire of both classical and contemporary music, and performs concerts throughout the year as well as bring- ing music to residents at Milton District Hospital and nurs- ing homes. Stratton ready to dust off old classics March 23 Concert tofeaturefavourites from salon era of 20s, '30s Milton will be reverberating with the sound of music's salon era at an upcoming concert appro- priately titled Puttin' on the Ritz. Milton Concert Presentations hosts the con- cert, which will take place March 23 at 8 p.m. at a location to be announced. Music will be courtesy of noted conductor Kerry Stratton and his orchestral guests. Salon era music is from the 1920s and '30s, a time when smaller orchestras entertained guests of hotels such as the London Savoy Hotel, the New York Plaza and the San Francisco Palace Hotel. The approach to the music was unique and the melodies charming or bittersweet. The sole purpose was to provide music that complemented the food, drink and conversation of the time. The upcoming concert will include such time- less classics as Charleston, Blue Danube, Anything Goes, Embraceable You, l'Il be Seeing You and Puttin' on the Ritz. Since 1988, Stratton bas been conductor and music director of the Toronto Philharmonia, the orchestra-in-residence at the Toronto Centre for the Arts. During his tenure, Stratton bas developed the orchestra from an amateur ensemble to a fully professional orchestra, with a season of main series concerts, educational programs, fundrais- ers and a province-wide touring schedule. In the course of his international career, Stratton has conducted orchestras in Europe, North America and Asia. Tickets to Puttin' on the Ritz cost $30 for adults and $25 for students and seniors.
