A6' - The Canadian Chan1plon,'Tuesday, March ý6, 2007 No gas,s50what?, While Ontario Energy Minister Dwight Duncan may flot be lasing any sleep over the provinces temporary gasoline short- age, a cavalier remark hie made during a recent tele- vision interview likely did littie to satisfy cansumers on the verge of panic. During a national news report, Duncan responded to a question about the seriousness of the gas shortage by saying: '50? So? Did everyone get gas? So what?" So what? if the energy minîster can't get bis head around how the image of closed gas stations might raise concern among con- sumers. perhaps the pre- mier needs to ask himself if Duncan offers the right approach for the job. If the Provinces energy minister feels its no big deal for consumers to live with the uncertainty of the availability of gasoline, hie needs to get his head out of the oil sands. So what? Until alternate 'green' fuel sources become more universally viable or gov- ernmenLs commit funding for a seamless GTA public transit system, gasoline remains the lifeblood of our economy. Without it people can't get ta work and consumer products can't get to market. While Duncan offers a so what?, we would respectfully offer a ques- tion back ic bim - What is hie and the Liberal gov- ernment doing to lessen Ontario's dependencv on gasoline? Readers Write Send yoR letters ta rnmnhiton~u@rsearch om. Let's deal with the facts surrounding power plant DEAR EDITOR: 1 would like to correct some of the comments made by Robin Buck in his February 9 letter concerning the elee- trical generating station to be built in Halton Hilîs. Buck stalles that building the power plant will "decrease our ever dwindling farmland." The fact is that the power plant site is part of the Highway 401 - 407 industrial corridor, which is already zoned for industrial use. Prior to the power plant, the pro- posed use of this site was for a distnibu- tionlwarehouse facîlity, not farming. Buck further states that the power plant will "diminishi the natural heauty of the area and serve as an oxymoron ta the label 'World Biosphere'." lu realîty, the power plant is planned no be a viel- landscaped and screened facility in amongst numerous other large indus- trial buildings as part of the industrial corridor. The label 'World Biosphere' neyer has heen applied to ihîs industri- ai corridor. The letter goes on ta ask "What about the Clean Air Act of Canada?" With respect ta Canadas Clean Air Act, it references the Canadian Environmental Protection Act as the legislation cavering emission stan- dards. The power plants environental report uses the standards contained in the Canadian Environmiental Protection Act and the Ministry of Environment air quality standards, plus other standards contained in Ontario provincial legislation as the criteria for evaluating the auîicipated plant emis- sions. The repart concludes that emîs- sions wsll mecs ail aI the niumeraus fed- eral and provincial standards. I understaud that ual everyone likes the idea of au electrîcal generating sta- tion anywhere near himi or bier, but, please, let the debate he hased on the facts. KEN LAWDAY, PENG. MILTON Pedestrian crossing device is in town's best interest DEAR EDITOR' Currently we have more than 1,000 families using our services at the Milton Community Resource Centre. lt's hard to believe that we have been in our new building for over five motiths now The number of families in aur programs bas certainly grown over this period of trne along with the concern of noa sidewalk or fia pedestnian crassing device. Many families walk ta aur location. The children in the Bronte Street School and Cherish Nursery Sehool also walk an field trips around our neighbourhood. We also have a family resaurce program called 'Stroller Fit'. This involves parents with young children leaving our location ta go on a one-hour walk within the communi- ty. As theres no sidewalk on the west side of Bronte, thse parents and children must cross Bronte Street. This could involve up ta 25 parents witb strollers crassing the busy street. As yau may be aware, June 2, 2007 is aur annual Fun Fair. The Fun Fair is aur largest fundraising event of the year and we sec mare than 1,000 families. We're looking ta add a new event ta aur Fun Fait this year - the Bronte Street School childeare children will parade front 410 Bronte St. S. tar Victoria Park. This will mean children, staff and parents will be required ta, cross a busy road without any form of pedestrian erossing device. 1 [tel that a pedestrian crassing device is in the towns best interest. Please take inta consideration the caneernis froru a significant amaunt af local families in this area as shown through a petitian currently still in pracess.
