Fee m ytnutpa e o By Dennis Smith SPECIAL TO THE CHAMPION Investigators have credited old-fash- ioned police work with helping find a suspect in the Under Armour bank rob- beries. Joseph Vrbranac, 34, of Kitchener was arrested without incident by Peel Regional Police while heading to work in his hometown Friday at 6 a.m. He was taken into custody and charged with 17 southern Ontario bank robberies, including two in Milton, the most recent last month. Police named the case after the cap worn during nine of the robberies. "The work of all police services involved contributed to his arrest," said Det. Sgt. Bruce Chapman of Peel Regional Police. "It was just thorough, old-fashioned legwork and a lot of computer work. We did lots of data searches." le said those searches included thousands of checks of vehicles similar to the brown 2003-05 GMC Jimmy reported at two robbery locations. Vrbranac's vehicle was seized and is being examined by police, he said. Crime analyst used Chapman said police went through reports and used a crime analyst to determine why banks were robbed in particular locations, like Windsor and Barrie. "Hitting different places does not help anymore," he said. 'Going in dif- ferent jurisdictions draws more police and they can get caught because of information sharing by different police services." Chapman said Peel officers in unmarked cruisers arrested Vrbranac after developing a lead and following him since late Wednesday. "With police, there is no jurisdiction," he said about the out-of-town arrest. A Burlington robbery squad member BARRIE ERsKINE / SPECIAL TO THE CHAMPION Halton Regional Police Sgt.
