The Canadian Champion, Friday December 15, 2006 - 85 Salvation Army is at about 38% of its fundraising goal Withjust 10 days left until Christmas, the local Salvation Army is continuing to ask Miltonians to dig deep into their pockets in support of the less fortunate. At press time, the charitable organization reported it had raised $57,752, which is about 38 per cent of its $150,000 goal for the season, said Rachel Sheils, community out- reach co-ordinator. One -of the challenges this year is Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday, so volun- teers won't be out collecting then. "That day alone raises over $9,000, which we'll be missing out on," Sheils explained. She added she wants to thank Milton res- idents for their generosity so far, particularly for the turkey dinner recently held at the Fifth Wheel Truck Stop and the Morning at the Movies event at Galaxy Cinemas. Fifth Wheel served more than 350 din- ners with all the trimmings, and $2,150 in monetary donations was collected, as well as about $800 worth of toys and food. The event at Galaxy saw 565 people tum out, and just over $3,000 was raised. The United Way and Sobeys have teamed up to donate the fresh produce that goes into the Christmas meal hampers the Salvation Army distributes. "This wonderful endeav- our is taking about $4,000 off our budget and adding a couple of extras like oranges and juice into the hampers," Sheils said.
