Naming Kilbride native Evan Zych team captain wasn't one of them. "Evan's a mature young mani. He's good at school and witb people. He's a leader," said general manager Keith Pandovski, of the 5'il", 180 lbs. defenceman. "He may be young, but be's got the respect of the play- ers in the dressing room, and that's what matters." Wbile stili five months away from his l8th birtbday, Zych brings two years of junior experience to the IceHawks -the most recent of which was capped with a Sutberland Cup championsbip with tbe Jr. B Cambridge Winterbawks. So it's flot surprising tbat the OHL Kitchener Rangers' fiftb round pick in 2005 - wbo was also cap- tain during bis bantam year with tbe neighbouring Burlington Eagles - bas been a stabilizing presence for tbe rebuilding IceHawks. Remarked Zycb. -We've bad our struggles, obvious- ly, but bopefully tbings are starting to tumn around. Our lack of experience bas been tbe biggest cballenge. Guys need to get tbeir feet wet and learn wbat tbis level is ail about. and tbat takes time." Tbe young captain is not yet sure if be'il be back next season, since some NCAA Division 1 scbools bave expressed serinus interest in signing bim. But wbat be is fairly certain of is tbat if a strong nucleus of players retum- for 2007/08 play, tbe IceHawks sbould be able to take a sizeable step toward reciaiming tbeir perennial contender status. "Tbey won't bave tbat adapting period next year. We'll be able to get down to business rigbt away."
