Seniember 29. 2006 - B5 Local students are encouragedi to walk to school as part of IWALK Intemnaional Walk to School Week to begin this Monday Il's urne to gel those walking shoes ready Monday marks the start of the seventh annual International Walk ta School Week (IWALK), and the Regian and bath local school boards are encauraging schools, students, teachers, parents and community leaders ta take part. "Walking is one af the easiest ways ta build physical activ- ity inta a child's 111e," said Dr. Bob Nasal, Haltons medical afficer of health. "In Ontario, over 50 per cent of children are flot active enaugh ta achieve health benefits. This lack of physical activ- ity bas canînibuted ta the startling increases in obesity and type 2 diabetes amang aur children and youth." Last year, aver three million people warldwide participat- ed in IWALK, including students from 58 Halton elementary schools. Every schoal in Halton can gel involved, including those located ln urban and rural communities. For example, in areas where the majoriîy ai students can't walk ta school because ai distance, schaals can initiale organized walking graups at recess or lunch. During the week, the Region is also collaboraîing with local municipalities ta support ils anti-idling hlitz, challeng- ing motorists ta turn off their engines. IWALK îs organized provincially hy Green Communities Canada. Ils considered the sîarîing point for schools ta implement the Active and Sale Routes ta Schools (ASRTS) program, which includes several other initiatives such as no- idling zones, bus drop-ofi zones and mapping activities and exercises. Schoals that participale in IWALK 2006 are eligîble ta apply for small grants ta support the implementation af an additional ASRTS initiative.
