Plans for the 600-megawatt Auburn Energy Centre, which could generate enough electricity for 600,000 homes each year, have been put forward by EPCOR Utilities Inc. The company la looking to build the natural gas-fired power plant on a 20- acre site on Auburn Road, Iocated south of Hwy. 401, east of Trafalgar Road and west of Eighth Line. "We want to have the opportunity to join the community," said Neil Levine, EPCOR's manager of public and gov- ernment affairs. EPCOR is currently undertaking an environmental screening and review for the development, construction and commissioning of the plant. It reports the preiiminary issues tbat've been identified to address deal witb air, noise and water. So while information on emissions from the centre is stili being gathered, Levine noted that certain standards wriii have to be met. "We're committed to meeting or bei- tering ail provincial requitements," he said. If approved, EPCOR intends, t start construction of tbe plant in 2007 and have it operational by 2009. The centre would include a number of exhaust stacks, but bow many and their beigbts are stili undetermed. Levine said at the moment EPCOR la trying to meet as many people in the community, to gather their tboughts on the proposai. 'li's very important to us to be a good neighbour," he said. A public information session on the poiential plant wiil be held September 7 from 4 to 8 p.m. ai the Milton Leisure Centre. Those who attend will have a chance to provide input, meet the project team and review the environmental studys scope. The plans come in response to the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) request for proposais for a new local generating station, since more power is needed for the GTA. EPCOR ta one of six companies that have qualified to put forward proposais for similar hydro generauing plants that would be located in Milton or Halton His.
