I AIS - The Canadian Champion, Friday, JuIy 7, 2006 OPINI1ON National idiots Sirice wvhcn did C anada Day turm iotao an excuse ta hc a dr-unken mioron? While the' youths caught on camrera urinating on the' National War Mematrial i 0tta,.a on Canada Day areoit the first Canadians to mnake a drunken spectacle oif themnselves on a holiday wcekend, the're likely the' first to do so on such a national, public scale. Rather than settding for the role of 'village idiots', these youths are our 'national idiots'. Unfortunately, their disgusting behaviour points t0 many unsettling trends in our country For many people Canada Day isn't a celebration ai our country's greatness, but an excuse ta get plasîered. The desecration of a war monument lis also a signl of how littît' Canada's proud heritage mecans ta at least sorte of our youths. Accarding ta thet'Web site for \'eteran'. Allairs Canada, the intent af' the monument was ta create fig- ures expressing the idea that they're "alighting on the' world with the blessings of victory peace and liberty in the footsteps of the people's heroismn and self-sacrifice who are passing through the archway below.' But somnewhere along the way tht' monument becamne a convenient place ta hold a dntnken party. Unfortunatelyv this incident has sparked a caîl for increased st'cunity measures at the national monument. And thats really a shame because each secunity meas- uire reduces tht' public inttmnacy the memiorial should have with its intended audience. Hopefully these idiots will be caught and, with any luck, they will came before a creatîve judge who can somehow make tht' punishment fit tht' cnime bt'yond tht' normal monetary fines for public misehief convic- tions. May we suggest a lt'ngthy conmunity service sen- tence at a Legion hall, or a lengthy research project on tht' sacrifices made by tht' people this monument repre- sents. We would likt to suggest throwing them in tht' armed forces for a couple yt'arý, but that lîkely wouldn't do them or tht' armed forces any good. When 1 was making my plans ta get hitched recently, a wedding co-ordinator at the Niagara Falisview Casino Resort men- tioned that the City of Niagara Faîls' fee for a marriage licence -$100 -was less than other municipalities. That struck me as odd because 1 thought a marriage licence - a document required by the Govemecnt of Ontario before two people can tie tht' knot - would cost tht' same for evt'ryone everywhere in tht' province. Sounds fair, night? Not sol. When 1 went to the most convenient loca- tion for me ta purchase tht' licence - right here in town - 1 was shocked ta, find out that Milton charges $138. That prompted me ta begin a telephone most expensive place - at least oui of campaign ta set' if Multons fet' was in fine Halton and neighbouring Mississauga and with other area municipalities or Hamilton - ta buy a marriage if tht' honeymoon capital of tht' licence. 1 wonder why. world was just lessi out of sheer 1Tht' form ta tht' same, but tht' volume. Then Mississauga - $130. ' go for a marriage licence is Then Brampton - $130. Halton HuIs. Its nat that far of a dlrive iande Then I got tht' best price yet. I called Hamilton and tht' cost was even Iras than Halton Hills and Oakville at $112. I had tht' ares pretty much covered and the' result was disappointing. Milton was tht' you don~t have ta pay for parking. You can save yourself $23, and that could definitely came in handy considt'ring ail tht' cos associated with tht' biggest day of your life.
