The Canadian Champion, Friday, July 7, 2006-B5 Veterans and their families enjoyed a pancake breakfast on Canada Day, giving the veterans a chance to relax and rem- inisce with old friends at Victoria Park. It was followed by a brief ceremony at the cenotaph to honour the veterans and remember fallen comrades. The morning concluded with the veterans being piped into Canada Day festivities at the fair- grounds. Above, Second World War veteran Dewart Downs - a 58-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 136 - offers a salute to fallen comrades after placing a wreath at the cenotaph. At left, brothers Eric (left) and Ralph Merkley find a bench under a shady tree to talk. The two are Second World War veterans, Eric of the 17th field medical core and Ralph with the Royal Air Force 202 squadron. Below left, Gavin Simpkins, 2, runs to greet his great grandfather Vernon Vanderwater. Below, Eileen Callard holds the hand of husband Stan, as they reflect on 62 years of marriage. The two are both veterans - he a bombardier with the Royal Air Force bomber command and she a member with the anti- aircraft artillary unit stationed in London, England.
