Power plant proposed on Main, east of Fifth By Melanie Hennessey CANADIAN CHAMPION STAFF A 680-megawatt power plant has been proposed for lands at the terminus of Main Street, just east of Fifth Line, that could open in 2009. Plans for the natural gas-fired, coin- bined cycle facility - named the Milton Clean Energy Centre - are now being put througb an environmental assessment and will be the subject of a public meeting next week. Pristine Power Inc, a Canadian power project developer, put forward the concept after the Ontario Power Authority sent out a request for propos- ais for a new local generating station. "We're responding to a need for power in the GTA," said Julia Ciccaglione, Pristine Powers vice presi- dent of environment and strategic development. The proposed site, a 22-acre proper- ty bas good proximity to H ydro, One lines and is also dcsignated as an indus- trial park area in the Town's Officiai Plan, she said of the land-, ments. The plant would encompass about 10 to 12 acres of the site and would include two approximatcly 150-foot- taîl exhaust stacks - about the samne height as the electrical towers in that area currently - and a 30-loot-taîl structure that would house cooling towers. The facility would operate during periods of peak power demnand, which usually coincides with daytime hours, said Ciccaglione. It would create about 20 permanent skilled labour positions and 200 construction jobs over a two- year period. While the proposedl design of the plant isn't quite ready for public view- ing yet, she said, "We're trying to do somnetbing a little different than your typical box." She noted that the centre would lea- ture technological advances such as the best available emission controls and modemn cooling tecbnology. The environmental assessment process the centre is subject to will look at its potential noise and emission 1ev- els. Cîccaglione said the facility wouldnt be allowed to produce more noise than the existing level in tbe Main StreetfFifth Line area. While she said the emniasions fromn the plant would contain nitrogen oxide and some particulant matter, she emphasized that natural gas burns quite dlean and coal-fired plants have higher emissions. Ciccaglione said the big thing that sets Pristine Power apart is that it looks for synergies it could create in the coin- munities it cornes to. For example, she said Pristine esee CONSERVATION on page AS Today ys Champion OPINION A6 CLASSIFIED A23 DATELIN« B7 REAL ESTATE B12 wvwnimtoncanadianchampion.com FULL DKBTIUDUTiON *Lehian -.
