AIS - The Canladian Champion, Tuesday, May 30, 2006 OPINION Always tie one on ht shouldn'i takec a tragedy, like the lotes of life on Rice Lake near Peterborough on the Victoria Day holiday weekend t0 remînd uis the decision not îo wear a lite- jackct whîle boating is a choice betwcn lîfe and dcath. WýNhcn seven people went on such an excursion on tic popular cottage countîr> lakc that Sunday. their vessel met the legal requiremreni of being cquippcd ,Nith ai leasi one personal Rlotation device tor each passenger. Unfortunatelv, like seat- belts, hfe-jackcits lose al iheir lite-saving potential when we opi noi Io wear thern. In the lîolidaN- ,Ncekend iragie accident. onl>' four of the doomed boat's seven passengers werccr wearing life-jackeîs before emharking in conditions dcscrîhed by one local as îoo choppy to he oui on the water. Whien the boat capsized, aIl seven boters were seul into the lake and only tour were able ian niake îî sately to shore. Can y'ou guetes which four? The miajoriiy of stmaîll vessel boatîng deatis could be prevented ver> easily and inexpcnsively by sirnply leg- islating that life-jackeîs be worn by every hoater. lînlikec seai-bels, ihereýs currentlv no laso in OSntario ihai forces recrcaEiEnnal hoaiers to iake commn sense precautions agaînsi upredictable accidcnts. Certain]), the tamilles ot lasi weekends accident vic- tiras would agree sq urnie ihat changed. Readers Wriîte- Send your letters to rnltonaii@haltcinsearchom or drop them off at 875 Main St. E. Where is levidence toprove that fluonide is inm se? DEAR EDITOR: The Ontario Dental Association stat- cd in a recent letter 10 the editor that fluonidation was one of the greatest accomplishments of the 2Orh century according 10 the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. Withouî any corroborating evi- dence, they just said that it was proper and sale. Aiter a myriad ni letters explaining the negative effects of fluoride îhrough- out multiple sources, I would like to turn the argument over to them. To bal- ance out this discussion, I would ask them to please explain in detail why fluonidation is safe. If we can produce multiple reasons why its unsafe, then they should be able to produce even greater evidence why it is sale, considering it's one of the greatest accomplishments of the 2Otb century We have heard basically nothing about why fluoridation is okay to use other than "it prevents cavilies." Considering Milton is one of the only towns left not t0 use it, I would tbink it would be easy for them 10 con- vince me and the Test of the general public why we should now accept it. t find their lack of response 10 aIl of our letters quite disturbing. SCOTT TURNER RIVERPIACE CRESCENT Theft of vase extremely disappoiniing DEAR EDITOR: I've been living in the Main Street/James Snow Parkway area of Milton for the last îhree years. One of the reasons I chose 10 move 10 a amaller towni was because I found it soi safe and the people s0 genuinely kind. 1 was in shock and dishelief when over the long weekend 1 found that someone had stolen a wroughi iron vase troîn mv front porch. ht %vas go cii îo nie as a gîfi t t eso we%-eks ago and 1 jusî lovcd it The fîrsi thîng ihat crossed nis mmnd svas why ivould soîneone \vant to invade anothers propcrty and steal something that doesn't belong to îhem? It's very discouraging 10 îhink that such a mean-spirited individual or mndi- siduals live soi close to me. Maybe Milton isn'î as safe as I had hoped. Where does it stop? Do I need to chain down my other vases and patio fumiture? just thought 1 needed to bning thîs to the attention of the local resîdenîs, so no one is left dîsappoînîed sshen somethîng sentimental or valuable goes mîssîng from iheir front porch. JOANNE D'ABBONDANZA MILTON Traffic and Hawthome Village littering both becoming big problems DIEA EDITO0& To begin, 1 need to write to [et ouI my frustrations with traffic in Milton. [ drive eastbound on Derry Roed every momning and caret believe the amounit of truffic, mostly due to the brainiacs at Town Hal who chose to put a liglit at Derîy and Fifut Une. Taldng these lights down would relleve a lot of stres and pressure. Also, 1 agree with a previous Icuter writer who men- tioned maybe closing off the right lane at James Snow and Derry until itfs a continuous two-lane road. My blood bouls when sorte drivers feel they have the right 10 butt in front of eveiyone else who have been waiting patiently so that they can save a whopping 10 tci 20 sec- onds off their commute. Grow uap you selfish drivers and watt your tum like everyone else. 1 canet believe haw many aduits act like children driving cars. Secondly, 1 live in Hawthorne Village very close 10i a section ai te Union Gas lime. At "ii section, Canada Post bas ils maiboxes set up temporarily. What disgusts me is thte amount ai bitter that ends up on the gas-line greenbeit and my yard. Are Miltomians really that lazy that tbey catit take their flyers and mail that îhey don't want borne and recycle il? l'i embarrassed to be a Miltonian witb tihe amount ni liîtering that takes place in and around Hawthorne Village. Stop being cbeap and lazy Hawtborne Village residents, and put your lîtter wbere it belongs. It's not that difficult a task.
