Crockett, R Eng., Commissioner of Planning and Public Works Notice of Pesticide Use The Halton Region Health Department monitors standing water and catch basins in urban areas on public lands in Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton, and Oakville for mosquito larvae. When mosquito larvae are found, the Health Department uses larvicide to control mosquito larvae in order to reduce the incidence of West Nile virus in Halton. Larvicide will be applied by a licensed applicator contracted by the Region. In Standing Water Throughout the summer, the Halton Region Health Department will apply larvicide to standing water sites under the direction of the Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Bob Nosal. A granular formulation of the larvicide Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis), AquabacTM 200G, registration number 26863, will be placed in affected standing water on public lands in urban areas in Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton, and Oakville. Signs will be posted at each location indicating when the larvicide was applied. In Catch Basins Throughout the summer through October 31, 2006, the Halton Region Health Depart- ment will apply larvicide to catch basins under the direction of the Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Bob Nosal. A pellet andlor briquet formulation of the larvicide methoprene (Altocid®), registration number 21809 for pellet formulation, 27694 for briquet formula- tion, will be placed in catch basins in urban areas on public lands in Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton, and Oakville. The SmokeFree Ontario Act As of May 31, new legislation is coming into effect that will help improve the health of all Halton residents and residents of Ontario. The Smoke-Free Ontario Act effectively bans smoking in ail enclosed public places and workplaces. This new legislation compliments the work that is already underway in Halton.
