A4 - The Canadian Champion, Tuesda May 23, 2006 Lots of violations found during truck safety blitz By Stephanie Thiessen CANADIAN CHAMPION STAFF A truck driver carrying corrosive material with no training was just one of the safety infractions encountered recently during a truck safety blitz held in Campbellville. The May 10 blitz was held at Mohawk Raceway on Guelph Line, with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, the Ministry of the Fnvironment, OPP and Halton Regional Police joining forces. The partnership between the agen- cies allows more vehicles to be checked. More than 50 per cent of vehicles inspected were taken out of service, a rate thats; about average, said Sgt. Trevor Hay of Halton Regional Polices regional traffie unit. The inspections aren't random, but are targeted at the vehicles that don't seem fit for the road. "Ours (blitzes) are always high, just because we're looktng for the bad MILTJON MrUm ones,- he explained. He added this type of blitz is effec- tive because it includes vehicles that mighr avoid tbe highways su they don't get inspected at the weigh scales. A total of 77 vehicles were inspect- ed with 19 charges laid during the hlitz,' which was cut short after a truck rolled over on Hwy. 401 at Regional Road 25. Thirty-nine vehicles werc taken Out of service. Most of the charges were due to improper brakes, Hay said, while several trailers were found tu have nu braking action at aIl. Notable incidents include somne- une who was arrested due t0 an ont- standing warrant, and another who simply abandoned his vehicle after bis plates were remnoved, because of its pour condition. His three-year-old son had heen riding with fuir. Hay noted most veicles taken out of service were fixed on the spot. Stcplîanie Thiesseî cati bc reached ai sthiessen@un)iltoncanadiaîichampîon.rom.
