But Miltoný trustee doesn't think it safe By Melanie Hennessey CANADIAN CHAMPION STAFF About 250 students living in the town's east end who are currently tak- ing the bus to school will no longer be able to do so in the fall. At its meeting Wednesday night, the Halton District School Board approved eliminating busing for certain Hawthorne Village Public School and E.C. Drury High School students in an 8-2 vote. The rationale behind the change, as explained in a board staff report, is that construction has slowed down in the area and stop signs and traffic signals have now been installed, making it safe again for the students to walk to school. Exceptions to the board's transporta- tion policy - which stipulates how far away a student bas to live to be bused to school - had been made for the pupils for safety reasons. The change affects 208 Hawthorne Village students - 162 who reside east of Fourth Line, south of Derry Road and north of Louis St. Laurent Boulevard and 46 who live in the Kennedy Circle and Deacon Drive area. In addition, 34 E.C. Drury students who live east of Thompson Road between Derry Road and the railway tracks to the north will be impacted. Burlington Trustee Peggy Russell and Milton Trustee Paul Tate both voted against the changes. "I thought we could do another year (of busing) until we get more construc- tion out of the way," Tate said in an interview with The Champion, citing safety concerns for students walking in close proximity to construction equip- ment. He also brought up the fact that while the Town has indicated it will approve the placement of a crossing guard at the corner of Fourth Line and Clarke Boulevard for Hawthorne Village students, the board doesn't have any ability to force the municipality to do so. "As a board we're making a decision when all our ducks aren't in a row," he said. "I didn't want to be part of that." He added that hes going to work hard to make sure residents in the Fourth Line/Clarke Boulevard area know about the crossing guard job opportunity The staff report to the board explains a transportation policy excep- tion was made for the 162 Hawthorne Village students for the 2005/2006 school year because there was no stop sign on Fourth Line, but now one has been erected at Fourth Line and Clarke Boulevard. see FAMIUES on page A5 Inside Today's Champion OPINION A6 BUSINESS DATELINE CHAMPION COUNTRY AIl CLASSIFED A17 www.haltonsearch.com - e e www.miltontoyota.com GORRUD'S AUTO www.gorrudsautogroup.com A7 A10 COM M U NIT Y
