Tbe eseni at Rattlesnake Point Golf C lub - which was attended by dozens of students lrom 19 Halton schools, busi- ness professionals and local counicil members - featured astronaut Dr. Roberta Bondar as the keynote speaker. She entertained the crowd wîth a slide show and dis- cussed everything from space travel to global warmning. She told the audience that as humans, we can't help but affect the natural environment in some way "Fverything we do, we must remember it will aIl bave an environmental impact," she said, such as building trails. "Only with co-coperation with eacb other can we actually mînimize the impact on the environment." Dr. Bondar also explained that things will change over the years in the environment, su "what works today might not work tomorrow" "The planet is constantly changing," she noted. To illustrate that point and bow it ties into global warm- ing, she showed a series of photos of the largest fresh water ice shelf in tbe Arctic thats slowly melting. She pointed out global warming îsn't just related to human activity, but also lies back into the fact that the world is still changing. Dr. Bondar went on tu show the crowd photos of herself in a space shuttle and some pictures that were taken [rom space. She also displayed a shot of a shuttle taking off, noting that wbîle the shuttle does poke a bole in the ozone layer, its a small hole that gets replaced very quîckly She said that of the 500 peuple wbo've gone mbt space, only 40 of them have been women, wNith two of those women beîng [rom Canada. Dr. Bondar was the first Canadian woman to travel in space. After ber îalk, Dr. Bondar took a few minutes to answer questions fromn the audience. One woman asked ber to dîscuss bow important it 15 10 pick up alter oneself instead of littering. "lî's a huge issue," Dr. Bondar said. "People seem to defanît to beîng lazy. But if we make tbings, we're responsi- hIe for recycling it." She saîd if she isn't near a trasbcan, she'lI put wbatever garbage she bas in ber pocket until she can dispose of it. "I carry it as a badge of bonour," she said. "lîs a malter of values and its a malter of ethics." She suggesied that everyone treat the environmaent as a place thats meant to be preserved the way it is. Another woman asked Dr. Bondar for a few suggestions on what one can do from day to day to belp the environmaent. Dr. Bondar told ber she tries t0 get people to recycle and compost.
