The Canadian Champion, Friday, February 17, 2006 - A3 Citizens oppose subdivision on shadow of the escarpment 8y Mveiarue llennessey CANADIAN CHAMPION STAFF Revised plans for a proposed west end housing development gamnered litile support from local residents at a public meeting Wednesday night. About two dozen concerned citizens gathered at Hugh Foster Hall to look over the plans that now cali for 303 homes, which is down from the earlîer proposai of up to 640 houses. Despite the number decrease, residents still told the developer tbat they don't tbink the land, located north of Main Street between Bronte Street and Tremaine Road, is an appi opu uic place ti a i csidcnii lvi opment. "This area is under tbe protection of the Niagara Escarpment. It was put tbere for a reason," said Appleby Line resident Keitb Hincks. "We've got a gem here. Let's not lose it. 1 don't tbink we need it (the develop- ment) ." Local citizen activist Bob Beyette also sbared concerns about the homes' impact on the escarpmnents environment. "The ligbting of that area will cause a detrimental affect to the wildhife of the escarpment," be said, explaining the animaIs would be drawn to the light, which would lead to more road kîll. Stecies Avenîue icsidcnt Mike Griinwood expressed concern about the amount of traf- fie the developmnent could bring to the west end of town. He said he estimates there would be 500 to 600 vebicles coming and going from the proposed subdivision during the moming and evening commute. "It seems to me we're looking at a tremen- dous traffic bottleneck," he noted. Milton resident Kevin Brackley announced that he bad a message for the developers. "This housing development should blend mbt the Niagara Escarpment," he said, pointing to wbaî's been done in Kelowna, Brtiîsh (..oluia 10 u.arnollauge'hontes into the Rocky Mountains. "A lot of research bas been done on this. (Bri) colour is vcry important tu blend the homes mbt tbe escarpment." Wbile the plan is predominantly single family detached homes, about 70 town- homes bave been proposed for the portion of the property tbats closest to thse railway tracks. "We need the town homes for thse pur- pose of dealing witb the noise mitigation (from trains going by)," said Colin Cbung of Glen Scbnarr and Associates Inc., wbicb rep- resented thse developers - Central Milton see 0MB on page A5 Residents want Iower speed limits - rom TRAFFIO on page Al fog or other visibility constraînts. WVard 3 Councîllorjan Mowbray notcd ihat shes in favour of having the lines painted on rural roads. She added that she'd lîke to sec some consîsiency wiîh speed limits in thse rural area. In an interview with The Champion, Mowbray also said that she agrees in principle wiîh lowerîng speed limîts in rural Milton. "l'm personall kcen to bave the speed limits reduced in order to reduce the amount of people thai are goîng to be cutîîng ibrougis,' she saîd. Residents at thse meeting also had some favourable îhings 10 say about tise proposed road safety upgrades. "Better rural road line painting is a plus and is badly need- ed," said rural Milton resideni Bob Beyeîîe. However, he said he dîdn't like part of tbe Town policy that ays rural speed limits are 80 km/h unleas otberwise posted. This is sometbing thats stipulated under the Higbway Traffic Act. "Tbis is not a safe speed for those that live in the rural areas and use tbe roads as residential. streets," be pointed out. Fellow rural Miltonian Kevin Brackley concurred that sometbing needs to be done about speeders on local roads. "Living in rural Milton, 1 would (also) suggest reducing speed limita by 10 kilometres, as some rural roads are juat not buili for apeed." The issue will go before Milton council February 27. If apprnved, its expected the changes will be brougbt forward in a phased approacb and take a couple yeara 10 implemnent. Melanie Hennessey can be reached at mhennessey@milton- canadianchampion.com.
