While MADD is blessed with positive name recognition, a peer- less reputation and a large.part of the public's goodwill, the truth is the local chapter desperately needs money and volunteers if it's to survive as an effective defence against the horrors of impaired driving. "If we weren't here tomorrow, what's our community going to learn? Nothing," said administra- tor Linda Brick. "We're strug- gling to serve our community, a community that wants MADD's help. Without us, more innocent people are going to die." If MADD no longer existed, she continued, the anti-drunk driving message - which already falls on too many deaf ears - would be that much more silent. If MADD was gone, the host of programs it offers at the grassroots level would leave victims without advocacy and police forces with- out a valuable ally. More shameful still, Ms Brick added, young people hungry for good role models and ripe for learning responsible choices might make mistakes that cost them and others their lives. "We would be missing an opportunity," said Ms Brick. "We need to have people step in and help with educational events. Right now we have to turn invita- tions down - we just can't get there." While money is essential to carry out its mandate, of course, MADD Halton-Peel's first priori- ty is to get more committed vol- unteers on board. Without them, the agency sim- ply hasn't enough bodies to ade- quately raise the funds that in turn allow it to make its presence known. "We want people t join this group because it makes sense, not because they have to," said Ms Brick, explaining everyone - not just mothers - are welcome. "There are wonderful people out there who we hope will stop and think about volunteering 10 or 15 hours a month. They will feel very good at the end of the day." Currently, the chapter serves two regions with a combined pop- ulation of roughly 1.6 million people. "How can five board members and one administrator who have to wear 100 hats get the message out?" said former chapter presi- dent and current volunteer Stephanie Dooley. "We don't even have a fundraising person. Don't we have any leaders in our community?" Also needed are a vice-presi- dent, youth advocate, public rela- tions representative and more. The current president's term expires in December. Even if MADD Halton-Peel had a board of 12 members, more work could be accomplished, said Ms Brick, but that brings the con- versation back around to money. A charity golf tournament would be wonderful, she continued, but with the day-to-day demands of running the chapter, there's no one left with the time to organize one. Despite a paltry annual budget of about $50,000 (not even half of that has been raised so far this year) Ms Brick maintained that MADD Halton-Peel continues to press forward, substituting num- bers and dollars with current members' raw passion. "Our chapter is doing a dyna- mite job," she said. "We probably do better than any chapter across Canada with what we have. We do wonderful work here, but it's the same people doing the work." see STILL on page A5 1in10women will develo The risk increas- es with age.
