Some are fresh-faced teens whose lives are just starting, while others are older women who know a littie too rnuch about the realities of life. Sorne have bravely survived sickness and disease, while others are praying they'll neyer have to. Whatever their differences, what these womcn - and some men b ave in common trumpa everything cIsc. Tbey'vc ail heen toucbed in tomne way by can- cer. And tbey've alI decided tor risc up and figbt this common foce by doing somnetbing tbey do every day -walking. From September 9 to 1l, about -50 Miltonians will he joining tbousands of other dcdicated men and womnen to take part in tbe third annual Weckend to End Breast Cancer in Toronto. They'll walk 60 kilomtetres in two daya to raise funda and awarenest for Princess Margaret Hoapitai's hreast cancer pmograins. "Witb one in nine Canadian womnen diagnosed witb breast cancer in ber lifetime, the partici- pants of 'Me Weekend to End Breast Cancer bave thse opportunfity to make a personal differ- ence in the figbt against breast cancer and, col- lectively, will have an enormous impact on breast cancer research and funding," aaid a tpokcspcrson for the event. In order to participate, eacb walker must train for tIhe walk and commit to raising a miùnimum of $2,000. "When my grandchildren ask me 'Grandma, whcn you were littie was there really a disease called breast cancer?' I want to be able to answer, 'Ycs, dear, but there isn't anymore."' An initial besitation about sucb a huge under- taking seemas tor be a feeling many of Uic partici- pants battlcd. Local resident Sarah Parker said feelings of self-doubt came flooding in and fear took over. -1 was ftigbtcncd of walking 60 kilometres. "People who are Iighting this diacase do flot have the luxury of such petty fears."1 Kimberly Morris said it's her friend Mary-Ann Cheung who's to tbank for her participation. "She actually talkcd me into it, as I have to admit 1 was very intimidated about the whole tbing," Ma Morris said. As a creative way to fundraise, Ms Morris, a teacher in Missiasauga, belpcd put on a 'Change for Change' drive at ber sehool. "We raised $9,010 by collecting loose change. It's amazing how fast pennies and nickels can add Up," she said. Willi Goodfellow, another Milton participant, is walking in the event for the first time this year. She too said she was intimidated by the tbought of raising $2,000, but quickly overcame that wben she considered the bigger picture. "Every time 1 hear of someone hcing diag- nosed with hreast cancer, 1 fe guilty for the relief 1 feel (at being heatby) and sorrow for the grief another family suffers." Marianne Davidson will be walking for the first time with ber sister-in-law and ber two daughters. Her motivation is, quite simply, ail the people in ber life wbo have heen stmuck with breast cancer. "My one aunt succumbed to breast cancer over 20 years ago. But two other aunts of mine are in remission and are doing well," Ms Davidson said, adding, "We also have a wonderful lady at work that is also in remnission. She is a great gaI and bas sucb a positive outlook on life." She said she's heen gradually increasing ber walking distrance as she trains, and will soon attempt a 23-kilometre walk with ber husband. "As for fundraising, that's always a challenge, but 1 amn sure l'Il reach my goal," Ms Davidson said. 'Me Princess Margaret Hlospital Foundation is a leader in tIhe fight against cancer and the largest institution in Canada exclusively devoted to can- cer treatment, research and education. Funds will be primarily directcd to research, witb tomne alto going to support a new survivor- sbip clinic and programi at the hospital.
