AlS 6 The Canadian Champion, Fniday, July 29, 2005 Sculpture chosen forSuhK ea ehbit Will be part of international craft exhibition in thefail By STEPHANIE THIESSEN The Champion A ngelika Koeth bas a new mani in ber life. His name is Jack. Jack Works. As she puis an arrn on bis shoulder, ber smile widens and the twinkle in his eye seemas to beami brighter. lt's cleariJack's full of the qualities Ms Koeth values in people. He bas a certain "je ne sais quoi" attitude and doesn't take things too seriously. In fact, he seems to mirror many of Ms Koetb's own per- sonality traits. Jack Works is a sculpture. But it's surprisingly easy to forget tbat fact listening to his creator, Ms Koeth, talk about him, - be's neyer an "1il," always a "him." -I could marry a guy like this. H-e's got character," Ms Koeth, a local chiropractor, said with a laugh. Alas, Jack will soon be leaving the only womnan he's known when he takes a trip to South Korea where be'll have many womnen .- and men - fawning over him. Ms Koeth was recently informed that Jack was choaen to be dis- played in the upcomning Cheongju International Crafi Competition from September 30 to October 23. He'll be joining 80 pieces from Korea and 40 from other countries. Ms Koetb has an opportunity to, win up to $20,000 US in prize money at the international invitational exhibition. The themne of the comrpetition is 'Hide and Reveal,' a concept that seemns perfect for Jack, given the ever-present twinkle in bis eye. "He leaves and lives revealed and unrevealed years of dynarn- ic fun," Ms Koeth explaned, looking fondly at Jack. It took Ms Koeth about 10 weeks to create him, spending tbree or four bours at a time sculpting. His body is dlay, and be sports a cotton t-shirt covered in a casting slip that was carefully applied and ftred on. From bis ripped t-shirt to bis unkempt moustache and scraggly chest bairs, Ms Koetb made sture Jack was lifelike. She didn't want a dlay version of an unnaturally perfect mani. She wanted him to look lie somneone wbo could be walking down tbe street, sbe said. Even bis namne reflects bis everymnan appeal. "I like the idea of wbiskers that are wild - tbey're not perfect. 1 like the fact that be's ordinary. He even bas a big nose. His char- acter lines say that be's laugbed and bad fun," Ms Koeth said. When she looks at Jack, Ms Koeth said she sees somneone she's drawn 10. "Part of us wants 10 be like bim. You see that he's a bit of a rebel, but you see that he's soft, too." Since this is ber public 'debut,' Ms Koetb said the competition is incredibly exciting and that Jack holds an extra special place in ber huart Altbougb Ms Kouth said sbu's been creative for as long as shu can remumrbur, it was just sevun years ago tbat sbe began working with clay. b Design Having a website marks you as a serious professional. "Clay is a very sensuous îbing 10, work wiîb. And because I'm a cbiropractor, the anaîomny cornes easy." She sculpted Jack with lifu-sized proportions, although he's sligbîly amaller now since dlay shrinks about 16 per cent in tbe kiln, she said. "Because 1 know the anatorny and deal witb the spine so well, il cornes natural 10 do tbings on an anatornical basis." As she began 10 sculpt, Ms Koetb said Jack quickly took on a personality of bis own. She envisionud wrinles that she knew he needed and tbe sligbtly crooked teeth she now couldn't imagine bim witbout. As for Jack's impending journey, bu'll be packed in a Styrofoamn mould and bis current 35 10 50-pound self will wuigb 150 pounds by thu lime be's crated and boxed. HelIl bu put on a plane, wbicb will coat Ms Kouth $1,200, since Jack will bave a special safe place. "A plane ticket was $3,500," Ms Koetb said, laugbing. "I cbeckud out every option." One regret Ms Koetb bas is she won't be able 10, see Jack as aIl tbe exhibit-gours will. She won't be able 10 hear their commenta as thuy look ai bim or watcb their expressions -which, inevitably, will vary greatly, she said. "Everybody sees somnetbing different." Her next endeavour? Ms Koutb said Jack needs a companion... probably a lady with a ponytail and tattoo, wearing a t-shirt with just a little bit of lace ai the collar. "Sbe's going te, be fun too," Ms Koeth said with a pin.
