A30 - The Canadian Champion, Tuesday, July 05, 2005 Sawing, sanding and staying safe (NC) In order to complete your latest home improve- ment project you may need to enlist the help of an assort- ment of power tools - sanders, pressure washers, saws, brad nailers or power drills. These tools certainly make the job easier, however it is important to be aware of safe- ty risks. "As with any tool or piece of equipment, read the man- ual before you use it," says John McMurray, seasonal expert for The Home Depot Canada. "You shouldn't ignore manufacturer warnings or electrical test labels cer- tifying that the tool has passed safety inspections." The following tips can help to diminish the dangers: 1. Inspect the tool before each use including the elec- trical power cords/connections. Do not use the tool if there is any damage or undue wear to the tool, its acces- sories or the electrical connections. "One way to avoid this concern is by using a battery- powered tool," says McMurray. "Not only do battery-pow- ered tools provide a safer alternative but they have the added bonus of offering freedom of movement." 2. Do not allow yourself, the tool or the extension cord to come in contact with standing water while operating. Be especially prudent when operating a pressure wash- er, since water is involved. 3. Keep saw guards. in place, in working order and properly adjusted. Safety guards must never be removed when the tool is being used. 4. When using a saw, wear protective safety glasses with side shields and ear plugs and always remember to cut in a direction away from your body.
