The Sam Sherratt Home and Sehool Association sent out a letter recently asking for large signs to be installed along Trafalgar Road between Britannia Road and Lower Base Line - a four-lane road. 'Me association requested the signa out- line the requirement for trafflc to stop in botb directions for buses and the fines associated witb not stopping. The letter also called for an increased police presence at bus pick-up and drop-off times. Members of the association bave report- ed seeing vebicles not stop for buses on numnerous occasions. Halton's Manager of Transportation Services Edward Soldo told The Champion Wednesday that staff bave no problemn witb erecting the signa within a couple of weeks, but be wasn't sure bow many or wbat the exact wording would be. "We'll put up somne additional safety measures -anytbing we can do to raise the awareness," be said. This camne as good news to Ruth Rae- Hunt, president of the association. She said the dangerous traffic situation first camne to ber attention when she was driving borne from work one day nortbbound on Trafalgar Road. Jackie Lacenaire is one of those parents who's seen first-hand how dangerous tise situation is becorning for everyone involved. Since she lives on Trafalgar between Britannia Road and Lower Base Line, she's seen a couple of car crashes due te0 people not stopping for the bus. She said tbe accidents bappened because one driver stopped for the bus, but tbe per- son bebind tbem didn't. "Pieces of metal tlew everywhere," sbe said, noting ber 10-year-old daughter was- n 't even balfway on tbe bus wben these crashes bappened. "It's very dangerous - tbey don't stop." Ms Rae-Hunt said sbe thinks most peo- ple simply aren't aware that on a four-lane road that docsn't have a centre median, drivers traveling both ways are required to stop for the bus. Halton Regional Police Superintendent Joc Taylor told The Champion he tbinks people also aren't aware of the fine associ- ated witb not stopping for a bus - $500, plus six demerit points off your driver's licence.
