Jilu shots By MELANIE HENNESSEY The Champion After another season of low influenza immunization rates arnong local health care workers, the Region is once again appealing t0 the Province t0 make their flu shots rnandatory. A recent report from Halton Medical Officier of Health Dr. Bob Nosal showed large decreases in staff flu immunization rates at most of the region's hospitals for 2004 (numbers recorded December 15). Thle most significant change was seen at William Osier Health Care in Georgetown, which had a 32 per cent decrease in immu- nization over the previous year. "Clearly that is totally unacceptable and we need to deal with it," said Dr. Nosal of the large decline. At Halton Healthcare Services -both the Milton and Oakville hospitals -a seven per cent decrease was reported. Joseph Brant Memonial Hospital in Burlingion was the only location to see an increase, going up 1l per cent between 2003 and 2004. Even with that increase though, Dr. Nosal reported that none of Halton's hospi- taIs achieved the provincial target health- care worker Olu insmunization rate of 70 per cent. He told members of the health and social services cornmittee at a recent meeting that staff is doing everything it can in terrns of advocacy when it cornes to Olu shots. "What we need is a change in the actual (provincial) legislation," he said. The comrninee and Regional council both supported a recommendation that Regional Chairman Joyce Savoline write 10 the Minister of Health and Long-Terrn Care again requesting legislation for rnandatory influenza immunization of health care workers. Ms Savoline made a similar request afler the 2003-2004 Olu season, but so far the rninistry hasn't taken any action. Dr. Nosal 's report also indicated that seven of Halton's long-tern care facilities met the ministry target of 90 per cent iminunization coverage for health care workers last year, up from three in 2003.
