Halton Healtiscare Services (HHS) will receive an additional $1 .8 million in transi- tional funding from the Province -money that recognizes the efficiency of HHS, sys President and CEO John Oliver. The money will also assiot in balancing the budget for tic 2004/05 fiscal year that ended March 3 1. "Given the current financial forecast, we are optimistic that we will be compleîing tbis fiscal year in a balanced position but must awat the completion of our year-end processes 10 confirn the final balance," said Mr. Oliver. In a letter 10 HHS Board Chair Sbavak Madon, Minister of Healts and Long-Terni Care George Smitherman ackusowledged initiatives undertaken by Ontario hospitals 10 idenîify savingo in 2004/05 and coin- mended HHS for its efforts toward achiev- ing a balanced budget by Marcb 31. 2006. The minister continued in bis letter say- ing. "I know Ibis bas beets a difficult task and your demonsîrated commiîmenî toward opxrating in a sustainîble and effi- cient manner is recognized." 'HHS is a very efficient hospital. Il is rewarding that Ibis bas been acknowledged by the govemment." said Mr. Oltver. 'The minister's comments arc tnîly apprcciaîed and will be shared tbroughout the bospital. However. if we are 10 contin- ue te, provide our current level of service and grow to accommodate thc încreasing demand fromn our communities without a deficit. it will be necessary to obtain fund- ing increases greater than those currently planned and communicated by thse Ministîy of Healtb and Long-Term Care." In addition to Ibis latest Ministry of Healtb and Long-Term Care funding. HHS bas received $4.6 million in ongoing oper- aîing funding during thse pasi year. wbîcb included $1 million to operate two addi- tional intensive care beds. These beds, tetnporarily located on tise fourtis floor. bave assisîed 1-1-1 in addressing thse need for additional capacity in the Intensive Care Unit. HHS bas also benefited froro $8 miùllion in one-time grants and directed capital pur- chases, wbicb bas allowed for stabilization and some focused growth within specific bospital programs tbrougb the provincial Wait Time Strategy Initiative. HHS bas risen to, the challenges of fis- cally strained budgets in years past by vol- untarily initiating clinical efflciency and operational reviews, said Mr. Oliver. "In September 2004, we initiated our third operational efflciency oeview in as many years" continued M. Oliver. "Our management team, worked diligent- ly 80 achieve A possible efficiencies. However, the savings were flot sufficient enougb to allow HHS 80 continue provid- ing the cutrent level of patient services while balancing our budget - and it cer- tainly did flot allow for the expansion of any services. We are consmitted to, making every effort 80 reduce coots and find sav- ings without putting patient services ut risk. Obviously, we were facing a very daunting challenge."
