Glitz and glamour were in full supply as the Milton Chamber of Commerce announced Shamiùm Bhimji as Business Person of the Year, Granite Ridge Golf Club as Business of the Year (26 employees or more) and the Halton Compass as Business of the Year (25 employees or less). Recipients who'd been previously announced were Audrea Lear-Costigan for the Lifetime Achievement Award, KarI Reichert for Citizen of the Year. Don Joyce and Rita Ward for the President's Awards and Howard Mont for the Chamber Volunteer Member of the Year. "If's su bard to get to the point where we are because of the fine quality of peuple (nommat- ed)," said emcee and Town Councillor Mark Curtis before announcing the recipients. "These people should consider themselves treasured and valued by the people of Milton." First on baud to accept her award was Ms Lear-Costigan. Mr. Curtis described Ms Lear- Costigan as s devoted volunteer who meets needs as tbey arise. She's lent ber efforts to orgarizations including the Arthritis Society, thse Rotary Club of Milton, Waldie's Blacksmith Shop and the Milton District Hospital Auxiliary. "She's a lady with plenty of heart," Mr. Curtis said. After a standing ovation, Ms Lear-Costigan accepted her award and spoke of the many ben- eftts of volunteering, mentioning studies that show volunteers [ive longer and happier lives. "Volunteerism is so important," she said. "It keeps the world going. Without volunteering, the world couldn't go 'round." Citizen of the Year Mr. Reichert was spoken of glowingly by Mayor Gord Krantz. Mr. Reichert is responsible for the erection of the $11 -million Martindale Gardens retirement and assisted living home. whicb was completed a year ago. Mr. Reichert was unable to antend the awards gala, and chose Henry Hildebrand - who served with him on the non-profit Milton Millennium Community Residence - to accept it on bis bebalf. Mr. Hildebrand spoke of Mr. Reichert's unwa- vering faith in God throughout the nine years it took su tnake Martindale Gardens a reality, and conveyed Mr. Reichert's thanks to thie many sup- porters around town who played a part in the facility's creation. President's Award recipient Don Joyce was recognized for bis contributions tu various char- ity events including Gulfing For Cancer. He's a supporter of Rose Cherry's Home for Kids and participases witb various United Way ut Milton functions. He also helpa with the Steve Condren Golf Tour, wbich raises money to find homes for retired race horses su tbey won't be put to sleep, Mr. Curtis said.
