Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton. as the joint venture is now called, came into being Febmuary 22 when members of both organi- zations approved the amalgama- tion. Mo Collins bas an MBA and came from a suc- cexoful background of personal commercial banking prior te, join- ing the Big Sister team almost three years ago. Ms Collins said she's looking forward to the challenge that lies with unifying iwo agencies into one. "It ix really about doing what's beot for the ai-risk children of this community," ohe said. "We will be able to share our strengths, expert- ise and community relationohips for the benefit of both girls and boys." The United Way of Oakville, a major source of funding for both organizations, has been supportive throughoui the merger process. Big Brothers of Hatton was founded in 1965 followed by Big Sisters of Oakville in 1968.' The national body of Big Brothers and Big Sisters unified in 2000 with such positive resulto that many regional chapters followed suit, and by 2004 only eight communi- lies nationally hadn't merged. Locally, directors fromn both boards began a dialogue more than a year ago 10 explore ways 10 forge a clos- er partnership. The new agency will provide increaxed efficiencies, allow for beller promotion and expand serv- ices free of issues associated with gender.
