6 - The Canadian Champion, Tuesday, February 1, 2005 *comment Justice for whom? The path between the judiciat and correctional - stems, as we view it. shouldn't be as compticated as it s0 often seemis. Through the judicial system, those convicted of crimes should be pun- ished. The punishment should be fair and repeat offenders should face stiffer punishmient than first-time offenders. Habituai criminals and those using violence should be deait with even more severely. A I 5-year sentence for a violent crime should mean 15 years. While somne may sec this as simplistic. we believe if's just. hIcarceration shouldn't be a walk in the park. Last week federal and provincial jus- tice ministers met in Ontawa for two days of meetings ta discuss a number of issues. Amnong those issues were potenitial legal reforms that would sec dangerous offenders identified and lacked up sonner. The review would tackle *gaps* in the law that allow potential violent criminals to walk free. Sounds gond, right' While those positive mioves were announced last weck, it was also rcvealed that a $3.7-million six-year pilot project by Correctional Services Canada (CSC) will see prison inmiiates receive dirt-cheap tattoos. CSC defends the costly plan as a hid ta stop the spread. of HIV and hepatts C through the use of dirty tattoo needles. Tory MP Randy White is rtghttully outraged that taxpayers wilt subsidize ininates (who will also be paid ta staff the prison parlours) ta reccive tattoas -while Canadians who have diabetes have to buy their own iteedles." Are tattoos for- inmates samething law-ahiding, tax-paying Canadians should be concemced about'? Is this the kind of 'gap'that necds tackling? As we said, the judicial and correc- tional systems work hand-in-hand. It's fnîstrating ta see that ycî again the anc hand doesn*t know what thic other is doing. JUSTICE &o0MERY" WAS' COULI? lUwr'*ub8 w *Our Readejrs.»,dQ Write Mayor's comments don't tel! whole story Dear Editor: It waa imtereating to read Mayor Gord Krantz's year-end commienta in The Champion, especially the part where he pointed out that Milton property taxes are lower thaa thoae of moist surrounding and comparable municipalities. What the mayor and the article neg- lected to mention was the fact that Milton receives approximately $6 mnil- lion a year in slots revenue - a windfall that those municipalities the mayor likes to, compare us te, don't receive. Without that revenue, Milton property taxes would have toi be increaaed by more than 50 per cent to austain our cur- rent rate of spending, which would then make our tax rates one of the highest. In my opinion, this mayor and counici] haven't shown fiscal responsîbility. Despite the slots revenue, MUison proper- ty taxes have continued to, increase. The fact that auir property taxes are tnwer than those of surrounding municipalities bas nothing ta do with the actions of the mayor and council, but rather it's due ta thse decision of the previaus provincial Conservative govemment. which decid- ed to, allot a portion of casino slots rev- enue toi host municipalities.
