On June 1, 2001, a transport truck was struck by a westbound train at thc crossing at Guelph LUne and Camipbell Avenue due to, a malfunction of the train barrier. Thse barrier was in place conrect- y when the first westbound train passed the intersection and lifi- cd when the train had fnished through the crossing. The transport truck driver, assuming thse railway tracks were clcar, procceded across and was struck by a second westbound train that was following closely behind the first on the saine track. Fortunately, there were no injuries - only materia] damage - but recognizing this as a potentially dangerous situation, the NCCC sought answers and solutions. Since mid-2002, members of the NCCC have contacted the Transportation Safety Committee in Ottawa, Transport Canada in Toronto, Halton Regional Police and the Ministry of Transportation seeking an explanation and preventative measures to the problem that caused this accident to occur. Representativet from Transport Canada accepted the NCCC's invitation to attend an August 9 meeting. Doug Vollick, the Railway Senior Systems Engineer for Transport Canada, explained in detail that the second locomotive was following too closely to the first one and the barrier system didn't have time to recognize and activate. He said that immedi- ately following thse accident, an investigation was launched and measures were taken to prevent a siilar occurrence. Train crews were immediately issued new instructions regarding crossing procedures and modifications to thse barnier controls were put in place. Since this accident in 2001, a new, more sophisticated system bas been installed to ensure tise ban-iers operate properly at all rail- way crossings.
