6 - The Canadian Champion, Tuesday, May 18, 2004 *Comment *.-îà ua a ulu Ç~E 4~REWL~ liETOP, Barely six months into its man- date, the Ontario government has taken promise-breaking to a new level. Last week it showcased a new ability - spin doctoring. In a matter of only a few hours, the Grits managed to refuse to fund a Toronto projeet to track sex offend- * ers (at the measly cost of $700,000), changed their minds when the cniti- cism began to build, theîî somnehow * managed to blame the former Tory government for the whole thing. Amazing. In what could only be described as an incredibly insensi- tive move, considering il happened on the one-year anniversary of the murder of Toronto youngster Holly Jones, Attomney-General Michael Bryant and Community Safety Minister Monte Kwinter made it clear Wednesday the Liberals wouldn't fund the Tory project. Bryant indicated the Liberals were more eager to play a part in the pro- posed national sex registry while Kwi*nter said Toronto already had a good record in tracking sex offend- ers. However, afier Kwinter met with Toronto Police Chief Julian Fantino, and news reports began to surface about the Grits' decision flot to fund the project. the Liberals perforrned an about-face and announced finan- cial support for the project. To top it off they blamed the Tories for not implementing it sooner - even though former public safety and security minister Bob Runciman only announced the plan three months before last falî's election. With this tap-dancing aci, the Liberals sent a clear message to the public - saving children is less important than saving face. *Our Readers Write Miltonlana can make a diffrence-about Funeral goer says service touched her the future of their town, stresses rader and dîgnîfied Donny SmîIey's memory Cari the residenta of Miltons ctually make a difference by sharing their views an what the future of Mfiltan and of Halton sboutd be?
