'he response will have a big impact on whether the Region potentially pushes ahead with the controversial move of pri- vatizmng some or ail of those services, which are currently provided in-house. The Region has started advertismng - called an "expression of interest" - to see what the private sector bas to offer, said Adelina Urbanksi, Haltons commnissioner of social and comniunity services. "We're Iooking ai what the market has," Ms Urbanski said. "When we hear back on expressions of intercst, we'll be able to determine whether we proceed 10 the next step and how we proceed to the next step. If there are no suppliers of those services then there is no point." The Region is conducting an organiza- tional structure study to detennine if the Iaundry, maintenance and housekecping departments would be more cost-efflcienî if contracted out rather than staymng as staff positions. It would affect roughly 35 employees. That study is being done because Halton will open two additional long-term-care facilities in Burlington and Oakviile over the next year or so, and now is the best tune to tind the most cost-efficient way 10 mun them. It currenîly operaies Allendale in Milton. Any decision on contracting out laundry, maintenance and housekeeping will need regional council approval. A recommenda- tion could go before the healtb and social services commnittee in July. But Ms Urbanski stressed several times that no decision has been made about con- tracting out Iaundry, maintenance and/or housekeeping. 1 can't emphasis that enougb, il really is strictly an investigation," she said. If a decision is made to contract oui the services. Ms Urbanski said it would be imperalive for the Region 10 develop appropniate standards of care. sit down and say, 'Okay, if Iaundry is con- lracted oui what lime of day do we want it to be, what kind of water do we use.' "You gel right into Use nitty gritty detail." The issue of contracting out services bit a nerve lasi fail when it was revealed that Use Region planned 10 lay off three positions in hairdressing and one in foot care effective January 2. Around Usat time, Use public was also ioformed Use Region was gomng 10 study contracting out laundry, maintenance and/or housekeeping services. At a meeting aI Allendale wiUs residents and families, Usey were especially upset Usere was no consultation before Use deci- Sion was made 10 remove Use bairdressing and foot care jobs. They were called an "intimate service" by some, and oUsers expressed fear inexperienced workers would take over under a contract situation. The Region reconsidered and decided to exlend Usose positions until September. The idea was 10 give Use workers enough lune 10 fiisd oUser employment. Recently, Use Region, througb negotia-
