Dean Stanbridge waa presented witb tbe United States Environental Protection Agency's (EPA) 2004 Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award at a ceremony in Wasbington, D.C. April 13 for, bis work in reducing methyl bromide usage around tbe world. Mr. Stanbridge is tecbnical director and vice-president of tbe Steritecb Group bIc.s Canadian operations. A pest management industry expert in fumigation and industry- influencing tecbnology, Mr. Stanbridge bas dedicated bis 20-year career to fmnding, usmng and advocating reduced pesticide metbods of pest management. He was particularly mnterested in thse effeets of methyl bromnide on thse environ- ment. One of tbe most widely used pesti- cides in food processmng around thse world, metbyl bromnide bas been sbown to sern- ously deplete thse stratosplseric ozone layer of tbe eartb. Depletion of tbe ozone layer bas been directly linked to mncreased skin cancer rates and damage to crops and marine life .worldwide. "Great ingenuity and effort are needed to proteet tbe carts atmosphere," said Jeffrey Holmstead, assistant admiisistrator Office of Air and Radiation. "Mhe 200 Climate and Stratospberic Ozone Protection Award winners are fiiling tbis need by ieading our global community toward reduced emissions of ozone-,depiet- mng substances and greenbouse gases. "In doing so, tbese 29 people, organiza- tions and companies from 10 counitries have contributed not oniy to a beaitbier environent, but to a soussd economny based upon innovation and efflciency." In 1990, the U.S. EPA establisbed the Stratospherie Ozone Protection awards to recognize exceptional leadership, personal dedicatioi and technical achievements in protecting tise earth's stratospherie ozone layer. From 1990 to, 2003, tbe Stratosphenec Ozone Protection Award bas been present- ed to 460 individuals and organizations froir 39 countries. As a member of the Canadian Industry/Govemment Working Group on Metisyl Bromide Alternatives, Mr. Stanbridge bas worked witb members of tbe Canadian govemment to devetop alter- native metbods of pest management for tbe food processing industry. Mr. Stanbridge is a recognized expert in fumigation alternatives and bas been recruited by the United Nations to educate tbird-world countries - including Indonesia and Bulgaria - on methyl bro- mide alternatives. Under the direction of thse United Nations' Environenta Prograro, a coin- plete phase-out of methyl bromnide bas been called for in deveioped countries by next year and in developing countries by 2015.' Recentiy, Mr. Stanbridge's 2003 propos- ai advocating integrated pess management for Indonesian food processors was accept- cd hy tbe United Nations as a viable alter- native to methyl bromnide usage, a first in tise history of the United Nations. His individual work with more tisas 20 food processing plants around the world bas belped directly reduce metbyl bromide use by more than six tonnes during tbe last five years.
