The work hetween Thompson Road and James Snow Parkway is part of a total $11 mnillion worth of regional road improve- ments expected to occur in town titis year. Derry Road is a weIl-used, major est- west arterial which links Milton to Mississauga to the east and Burlington and Flamborough to dhe west. Most of Denry Road within Milton is lined by houses and only a smattering of businesses. Between Thompson Road and James Snow Parkway, there are scores of new bouses built and under construction on either aide of Derry Road. tt's part and par- cel of Milton's planned residential devel- opment called the Bristol Survey. "Once (the section) is completed, it will provide improved traffic flow to accom- modate alI the new people," Ms Kingamnili sald. "It will be a strategically-sound road." 'Me plan calta for the apeed limnit along Denry Road to be dropped from 80 km/h to 60 kmn/h between First and Fîfth Lmne - about 5 km in Iength -once it bas been widened to four lanes. That's anticipated to occur by the end of 2006. 'Eigbty kilomteres per bor is juas too fast for this road," she added. "Tbhis is going to be an urban part of town." Tbe Region will take mnto accouns the public's comtmenta froru the meeting as it fmalizes ils road design. Ms Kingsmill noted she doesn't expect it to change dra- matically. At least one lane would be kept open for traffic during construction. Cunrently, tbere's only s pathway on the north aide of Derry, west of Thompton Road. The road improvements are necessary, sald Chriatina Godbolt. She and ber bus- band, Fred, live off of Derry Road west of Thompson Road, the section that would sec work started next year. "I think it's needed because there's a lot of traftic on the road," sald Ms Godbolt, noting a reduced speed limit is "great." Meanwbile, tbe Region, whicb was to replace the low-level bridge that crosses Sixteen Mile Creek, west of Regional Road 25 will delay it until next year.
