The Canadian Champion, Tuesday, March 30, 2004- vGarbage diverted fromiI iandfiui continues to rise i By JASON MISNER The Champion Halton Region continues to steer more waste away from its sole landfill site on Regional Road 25 in Milton, but has fallen behind sonne of ita neighbours. In a staff report to the Region's planning and public works comn- mittee meeting last week, Halton's waste management division said 40.9 per cent of the 181,081 total tonnes of waste collected in 2003 was diverted from the landfill, pri- marily through recycling. 'he landfiil bas about tlsree mil- lion tonnes of space left, with a lifespan of about 30 years. Halton's diversion rate is up slightly fromi 2002's rate of 39.6 per cent, and 38 per cent in 2001. Ontario's average rate is around 26 per cent. Overall, the Region collected 5 per cent more waate in 2003 com- pared to 2002, mostly due to popu- lation growth and other waste enhancements. Garbage and blue box collection is a regional responsibility. It had been touted that the Region had the highest diversion rate in the GTA, but Peel has sur- passed the municipality with a rate of 45.2 per cent. It would look St where organic composting buildings exist - either publicly or privately-owned - and develop- ing a partnerslsip, to use it. It isn't a cheap venture. A comn- pany in Quebec for example charges $115 a tonne, including trucking costs. Before a recommendation is made, the public would be consult- ed, Mn. Miles said. It could comne before regional coundcillors as early as next year, be said. Burlington Regional Councillor Mike Wallace, chair of the plan- ning and public works committee, said he's "comfortable"~ with thse diversion rate, adding the Region isn't in competition with other municipalities. "I think we need to make sure the program we have now is maxi- nuzed in its efficiency," he said, noting he'd love to see blue boxes blanketing streets. Mesnwhile, a regional staff report examining the issue of a pay-per-gsrbage-bag system, which seas to be tabled last week, is anticipated to go hefore regional commuittee members April 14.
